Also it would still be nice to retain some sort of compatability for browsers without javascript (or with javascript turned off). I guess this is less of an issue these days. Maybe it's just me who keeps it turned off to keep from seeing X10 pop-under ads. -James |

The slick way to go about this of course would be to make php generate the javascript dynamically from the choices that the admin makes for a particular set of questions. Keep in mind though that this could screw with the results, making them less understandable. If you have question 1 which is a yes/no answer, and then have question 2 who's answers (and/or question) depend on the answer to question 1, you create a branching of the results.... Question 1 Yes 50% - Question 2 A) 10% B) 35% C) 40% D) 15% No 50% - Question 2 E) 5% F) 70% G) 25% Would you present it this way? Would you tally the total respondents for question 2 as being the sum of the respondents for each branch of question 2 (as I've depicted) or would it the percentages need to be skewed such that Question 2 adds up to 100% regardless of which branch an answer was made? It certainly presents a challenge. I work with a commercial knowledge management system that uses an HTML output preprocessor, which they call WebLingo. It really works just like php the way it's embedded into an HTML structure or vice versa. Anyway, they use it to dynamically create what could be several different javascript programs within the same HTML file depending on how it's accessed, what's in the user's cookie, or something along that line. Hi, I discovered phpESP a few minutes ago: seems a great program! I have two questions, however: 1) I would like to include pictures with questions. It appears that this is possible by including <img src=.... in the question text. Is this intended (to include any HTML)? 2) A difficult one: sometimes there are surveys where an answer on one question may impose a change in the possibilities for another answer. This is in theory possible to implement with client-side javascript. Is there a way to do so? I could live with some extra textfields in the admin interface where the javascript code is entered. Or a pointer in the code to add such functionality? Thanks Paul |

Oh! I didn't think of that. I intended for it to be a separate page of results. I suppose if you want the results and the survey on the same page you could do that. I haven't tested it that way, but apparently it works. =) -James On Wed, 16 Jan 2002, olaf wrote: > > Hi James, > > when i change this line, i will see only the Results, cause inside of > that if is a return; so it never goes through the part where the survey > is build. Hi James, when i change this line, i will see only the Results, cause inside of that if is a return; so it never goes through the part where the survey is build. By removing this return; (line 34 in handler.php) it works for me. First the results are displayed and then the survey. I think that is how it should look like, or? CU Olaf :-) "James E. This is the final release of v1.3. This is the most current stable release of phpESP. NOTE: The database layout of this release is NOT compatible releases before 1.3-RC1. Download: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/phpesp/phpESP-1.3.tar.gz If you are using version 1.3 RC1 or RC2, you can just replace the existing files with these (and edit paths/config if neccessary). If you are using a version previous to v1.3 RC1, I suggest installing this in a separate location, with a new database. Please see the SourceForge site for more information. -James |

I need then to let the students select the > language and do the survey. But the results has to be > stored the same way regardless of what language the > survey was taken in. > > Where do I start? Wow. Surprisingly enough this issue has come up before. No definitive solution was reached. The way the surveys are stored in the database does not make multiple languages of the same survey to be stored. One kludge that will work without modification is as follows: 1) *Fully* create a survey in one language. 2) Copy the survey for each additional language. 3) Change the text *only* (no order changes, option changes etc) 4) Enable all surveys and direct users to the appropriate one (based on language). 5) Use the "Merge Survey Results" (hidden) feature. [ manage.php?where=merge ] The Merge feature assumes that the surveys are *identical* in layout, so Q1 on S1 corresponds exactly to Q1 on S2 etc. The above solution was an interim solution. The best real solution I could come up with was to move the survey backend format to XML (rather than SQL tables). By using XML many problems are solved: o Much more flexible format (e.g. text in misc places) o Easy to use different front ends other than HTML (via XSL) o Customizable report/results pages (also XML) But there are still problems. I have not found a definitive way on how one should include multiple languages in one XML file. There are "lang" attributes that can be used ... And of course you could use more than one XML file (one per language). I have done work on using XML with phpESP, but am stalled on releasing it because of this problem. I don't want to do it one way then having to do it over another way. I would greatly appreciate any feedback from anyone with experience with multi-lingual apps. -James |

I haven't looked at that part of the code in a long time. [ admin/include/lib/espresponse.inc:392 ] Math functions are fine. People always want results in different formats or statistical methods, but for the sake of simplicity and general audience they will stay as they are. Any significant analysis of results should be done in a statistical analysis program. -James |

Hey everyone, Another bug squashed. If you tried to display results to the public by using handler.php, it would fail to do so and show the survey. I had 'defined' instead of 'isset' on line 31 of public/handler.php. Either get the latest version from CVS or change the line by hand if you need this feature. (Thanks to Ken Teague for the bug report.) For those of you who didn't know about this feature I will explain. The handler is capable of embedding both the survey itself and the results in a template. To embed the results simply add the statement ``$results=1;'' to the PHP tag in your template. For example: <?php $sid=42; $results=1; include('.../handler.php'); ?> Take it easy, -James |

I can translate the interface, which is cool and 50% done. I want to be able to translate the surveys as well. Let me explain: Here in South Africa we have 11 official languages. Yes eleven. The university is a Afrikaans/English university. I need then to let the students select the language and do the survey. But the results has to be stored the same way regardless of what language the survey was taken in. Where do I start? -- Danie Roux *shuffle* Adore Unix |

At the moment the code in CVS is stable, and is preferred to 1.3 RC2 because of a few bugs that I have fixed. The main reason CVS is stable now is that I am preparing to release 1.3, so I am only committing bug fixes, not new code. However, my first consideration when I say "stable" is data integrity; in other words data collected from surveys is correct and will not be corrupted. In this respect 1.3 RC2 is just as stable as the code in CVS, however when viewing the results (in phpESP) the CVS code works better because of bug fixes. So to sum this up. If you are running 1.3 RC2 you are fine, you will be able to easily upgrade to 1.3 (final) when I release it and you do not have to worry about any data loss. While using 1.3 RC2 you *do* have to worry if you rely only on phpESP for data analysis. I would suggest that if you have the ability, you should use CVS. CVS is a wonderful tool, and will make upgrading and fixing bugs much easier. For example, if you have 1.3 RC2 from the CVS tree, and I release 1.3 (final) all you have to do to upgrade is type: cvs up -Pd -rREL_1_3 For more information on CVS check out: http://www.cvshome.org/ http://www.gnu.org/manual/cvs/ Take it easy, -James |

Zero (0) values are ok. Are you still getting incorrect results? Make sure you have v1.4 of lib/esphtml.results.inc. The files in the CVS tree are more recent than 1.3RC2. -James Hi, i got the latest versions of survey_results.inc and esphtml.result.inc and now its working!! :-) Thanks. Olaf :-) |

Thanks for the N/A explaination. The Code i use is the latest (1.3 RC2) and the code in your CVS repository is generating the 0 values for the ranking. Version 1.5 of the survey_render.inc file. Thanks again for the nice tool ;-) CU Olaf :-) "James E. Olaf, I am CC'ing the phpesp-general mailing list on this discussion, I would like for you to join the list and continue the discussion there. Yeah, the precision option enables or disables the use of the "N/A" field (not applicable). If a respondant checks "N/A" then they are not counted in the "TOTAL" for that option. For example, the first respondant picks "3" for a question, and the second picks "2". The results now show "2.5" as the average (3+2)/2. Then the third picks "N/A", the result is *still* "2.5" because even though there are three responses, only the first two are considered because the third said that the question was not applicable (for whatever reason). However, as you have seen, the database keeps track of the number of "N/A" responses ... How would you suggest handling this data when showing the results. -James |

Well, you should be able to do this without changing any code. Its a little messy right now, because I adopted the authentication code from something I wrote using an external authentication method. The way to do it is just to add the user in for each group, with the same password. If you have so many students, I assume you will be adding accounts with a script (not by hand in the web interface). So something like this should work: INSERT INTO respondent (username, password, realm, fname, lname) VALUES ('foo', PASSWORD('foopass'), 'subj1', 'John', 'Doe'); INSERT INTO respondent (username, password, realm, fname, lname) VALUES ('foo', PASSWORD('foopass'), 'subj2', 'John', 'Doe'); Hope that helps. -James |

Great program Jimmerman! It's really well thought out. Where do I start looking if I want to change it to do the following: I want students (respondents) to be able to fill in only certain surveys. But the students is part of more than one subject (group). So I guess I want it so that I can assign more than one group to a student. It's about 20000+ students and I have no idea how many subjects. Once again thank you for the great work! -- Danie Roux *shuffle* Adore Unix |
