the API function that is used to compile the Java.inc PHP code to PHP byte code,
"zend_compile_string()", was not available in earlier versions of PHP 5.

Earlier versions of the PHP/Java Bridge used to use an extension, coded in C. We have dropped this
C extension in favor of a pure PHP implementation which runs on any platform.

The only disadvantage of the pure PHP implementation is that the Java VM doesn't start
automatically with the Apache or IIS server. One needs to start an external Java VM as described
in IBM's tutorial:
