I have a similar problem with 64bit system. Can someone please volunteer to help with the installation. I can setup a server with credentials. I'd be happy to pay for your time. Server is 64bit ubuntu 9.04 If you are trying to run java code from php and not vice versa ( run php on tomcat) you don't need tomcat do you? I'm not sure I understand how things work because on the 32-bit system I turn off tomcat and php is still able to instatiate java objects.
