sounds like PHP's pfsockopen() cannot detect a broken connection on some operating systems. A workaround is to use fsockopen() instead (open java/Java.inc and replace all pfsockopen() occurences). 

Which operating system and which PHP version are you using?

Do you have a packet sniffer installed to debug this problem? If so, please file a bug report to the PHP maintainers (=>fbugs.php.net) and attach the network packets to that bug report.
