  class Clazz { function __toString() {return "42"; } }
  var_dump((int)(string)new Clazz());

works correctly but 

  var_dump((int)new Clazz());

does not. This means that if you want to convert an object into
a value, you must convert it into a string first.

should work. Please ask the PHP developers why the extra (string) cast is necessary...
