Hi, the pipe method only works with the perfparse daemon (perfparsed) running as a background process. It cares about cleaning the pipe from outstanding data. If you want to use cron and perfparse-log2mysql to get the data into mysql periodically then you have to use a regular file. The file seems to be a regular file too, because a pipe has 0 Bytes and a "p" in the permission strings. Example: prw-r----- 1 nagios nagios 0 Mar 1 10:49 serviceperf.log http://perfparse.de/tiki-index.php?page=Minimal%20environment%20nagios%202.9%20and%20perfparsed%20reading%20from%20a%20pipe is a example how to configure perfparsed and the pipe method. good morning, perfparse people. i'm setting up perfparse 0.105.6 with nagios 3.0.1 on a centOS 5 machine. it is not working. i'm using the "pipe to perfparse" method as described in the install guide. nothing's getting in to the database, and it seems to be FIFO related. observe: [root@nagios01a var]# /usr/local/nagios/bin/perfparse-log2mysql -e error.txt [root@nagios01a var]# cat error.txt cat: error.txt: No such file or directory [root@nagios01a var]# cat error.txt.20080501.log 2008/05/01 12:59:55 [perfparse-log2any.c:157 24175 ] FIFO not authorized as the perf data input source ...now, my googling has shown that this is generally caused by either an error in perfparse.cfg, or incorrect permissions in /usr/local/nagios/var/perfdata-service.log. here's the relevent line in perfparse.cfg: Service_Log = "|/usr/local/nagios/var/perfdata-service.log" ...which i'm pretty confident is correct, and here's the permissions: # ls -l /usr/local/nagios/var/perfdata-service.log -rw-r--r-- 1 nagios nagios 198 May 1 13:03 /usr/local/nagios/var/perfdata-service.log i've been messing with this for days, recompiled like five times, and i'm at the end of my rope. help? |

Florian, Thanks a bunch, I actually found the information after scouring the user list archives. It was indeed the illegal macro characters, after modifying those everything began picking up. Update on Configuration Issues: 1. SOLVED - Perfparse Images not loading properly: Didn't have libgd installed properly. 2. SOLVED - Pipe to mySQL method not working: After going over this again I realized I was going about it the wrong way, changed configuration so Nagios invokes perfparse and everything is updating fine now. 3. PROBLEM - Plugin Output Issue: After changing the macro definitions in my process-service-perfdata command to match the names Nagios is now using, (i.e. $SERVICEOUTPUT$ and $SERVICEPERFDATA$) I am now able to see the results from the plugins when I view raw plugin data. The only hitch here is that Perfparse is not recognizing any of the binary data for any of my Windows servers I am monitoring with NSClient++ 0.2.7 2007-03-06. Perfparse does, however, recognize binary data from the localhost as well as a couple of switches I am monitoring via SNMP. 4. SOLVED - Broken formatting in View/Edit Host Groups Page: I'm still unsure as to how this came about, but dropping the DB in mysql and rebuilding it seems to have corrected the problem. In short, the only problem I have left is getting perfparse to recognize the binary output from the NSClient++ plugin on my monitored Windows servers. I seem to recall having to remove a certain character from the illegal_macro_characters setting in nagios.cfg in the past, but for the life of me I can't seem to find anything on this. Any help would be most appreciated. Cheers, E. Russell P.S. My apologies for the horrible formatting yesterday, my brain was perfparsed out and I was a bit too hasty with Outlook using HTML format. ;) |

Hi all, =20 I've setup Perfparse successfully before, however I'm running into a few issues now on my recent installation and hoping someone might have some pointers. Sadly, it seems like the Perfparse wiki is no more and the official documentation hasn't been updated in quite awhile. =20 Some specs: =20 Server OS - Ubuntu Server 7.04 =20 Nagios Version - 3.0b =20 Nagios Install Path - /usr/local/nagios/ =20 Here's where I'm at, I've compiled perfparse-0.106.1 and *seem* to have it successfully installed. I've added a link to it in my side.html and can access the perfparse CGI ok, but have a couple remaining issues: =20 1. None of the perfparse images will load correctly, going by the instructions I've tried multiple variations on configuring with the "--with-http_image_path=3D/usr/local/nagios/images" flag, but none of = them seem to work properly. Clearly Nagios doesn't have a, "nagios/images" directory by default, so not really sure why they recommend this particular path. At any rate, on my latest installation it seems to have placed all of the Nagios images in, /usr/local/nagios/shared/perfparse/images. =20 Things I've tried: - Configuring using a different, explicit path in the flag such as, "--with-http_image_path=3D/usr/local/nagios/shared/images" - Creating /nagios/images, giving the nagios user & group control over this directory and copying all of the perfparse graphics into this, then restarting nagios & Apache 2. I've setup Perfparse to use the pipe to mysql method, or at least I thought I had, sadly I can only seem to get perfparse to pickup information when running the "./perfparse-log2mysql -r" command from /usr/local/nagios/bin. According to the installation documentation, there doesn't appear to be any other steps I need to take or cron tabs setup in order for Nagios to be picking up the data from the logs, there seems to be something missing here in the documentation regarding this or maybe I've just forgotten. 3. When viewing the raw plugin data, the Plugin Output column only seems to be displaying, "$." I seem to remember running into this one before but for the life of me cannot recall the fix. 4. In the View/Edit Host Groups page, there is a, "/a>" in the "Delete" column, rather than an option to delete the host groups. This seems like a simple bug where someone missed closing out a link but since it seems to be generated HTML I'm not sure how I can correct this aside from modifying the source and recompiling. =20 Aside from these issues, Nagios seems to be starting just fine as does Perfparse, nagios is creating perfdata logs ok and perfparse seem to be generating its respective log files. Furthermore, running perfparse-log2mysql manually seems to be working just fine and inserting data into the DB (aside from the metrics which is likely related to the plugin output issue). I can provide my configuration files as needed, but if anyone has any suggestions as to some steps I might be able to take to fix some of these issues I would be most appreciative. =20 Cheers, ____________________________________________ =20 Ethan Russell // IT Administrator FG SQUARED interactive marketing 621 E 6th Street, Suite 200 // Austin TX 78701-3766 T +1 512 481 8831 x235 // F +1 512 481 8832 =20 |

I had the same problem today ... on CentOS 4 (which is built from the RHEL4 src.rpms) and in my case it ended up being /usr/lib/libXcompext.so.1 which is installed by NX (one of them anyway not sure if it is nxclient or nx itself). Removing NX did not help so I deleted the lib completely and it ran fine after. Very weird for some reason it was getting loaded up in the build of the testprogram and returned a bunch of errors on unreferenced _NX* symbols. Just don't feel up to testing it further but thought I would share. Aw: Re: php_ui installs to eprefix/sbin Hmm. Does it create any problems mixing php and cgi directories? What does apache do if a php file has accidentaly set the execution (x) bit? In my opinion the php and cgi directories shall remain separated. sbin is not a good choice too. In the actual CVS tree i have set it to: INST_PHPUI_PATH=${prefix}/share/phpui What do you think? Re: php_ui installs to eprefix/sbin Uhm *cough, cough* yes, alright, there is the --with-phpuidir option. Honestly missed that, sorry. Still - shouldn't this rather default to cgidir rather than sbindir...? (:wink:) I'd have posted a patch to configure.ac, but it ended up full of wiki syntax. Here's a simple diff: 318c318 < INST_PHPUI_PATH=${sbindir} === > INST_PHPUI_PATH=${INST_CGI_PATH} Regards, Felix ---- Reply Link: <http://perfparse.de//tiki-view_forum_thread.php?forumId=1&comments_reply_threadId=93&comments_parentId=87&post_reply=1#form> |

Re: libpp_storage_*.so I am seeing this in my perfparse log now: storage_mysql module failed to load (msg='/usr/local/nagios/lib/libpp_storage_mysql.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory') I can not find ibpp_storage_mysql.so anywhere on my system. Aw: libpp_storage_*.so The --disable-shared switch cannot work since perfparse dynamically loads the storage module(s) using dlopen(). Anyway, the warning is printed on every configure run. Usually you can ignore the warning. But if you encounter a error message that perfparse could not find a library, then you have to research where "make install" put these files and either you move them to a folder known by the dynamic linker (e.g. /usr/lib) or you tell your linker where the libs are via /etc/ld.so.conf - don't forget to run ldconfig. For troubleshooting locate your perfparse error log. In your perfparse.cfg you can define it with Error_Log =3D /somewhere/errorlogfilename If Error_Log_Rotate is set to yes, then the date is appended to the filename. You should also check your apache error logfile if any error messages are recorded there. I had a similar problem some months ago. The reason was a corrupted database. After issuing "repair table tablename" in mysql on some tables all worked. Hi, =20 I've been using perfparse for some time now, everything works fine for a few months or so and then suddenly the data in the charts just stops being plotted. I was wondering if someone might have some suggestions as to how I might troubleshoot this. It happened once before a month or so ago and I fixed it by simply dropping the catalog, and then rebuilding it. =20 =20 I'm now seeing the same behavior though, charts are chugging along just fine and then suddenly one day they just no longer plot any data. Everything else seems to be functioning fine w/ perfparse, the charts load up fine they're just devoid of any data, and I can still see performance data being returned within Nagios. I thought perhaps it was related to deletion policies, however, I have them all set to around 90 days and I know it has been far less than this since I last repaired the issue. Any help would be most appreciated. =20 Cheers, =20 E. Russell |

Hi ! I have no perfparse development environment so I can only read from the mail. What I see is that p2 is far too big. It increments until it finds a \0 character. If p2 is so big, there is a problem before in the string that p2 iterates on. Enjoy :) Yves On Fri, 30 Mar 2007 12:49:38 -0300, "Paulo Afonso Graner Fessel" <pau...@de...> wrote: > I've traced the problem with greater detail and found that the problem is > at perf_get_next at log_parser.c file. > > The problem occurs within these lines of code: > > if(p1[0] == '\'') { > p1++; > p2 = p1; > /* Check length of label */ > while(p2[0] != '\0') { > if((p2[0] == '\\') && (p2[1] == '\'')) { > p2++; > } else if((p2[0] == '\\') && (p2[1] == '\\')) { > p2++; > } else if(p2[0] == '\'') { > break; > } > p2++; > } > if(p2[0] == '\0') return(-2); > if(p2[1] != '=') return(-3); > /* Reallocate memory for label if necessary */ > l = p2-p1; > if(l>= p->label_len) { > p->label_len += 20; > perfparse stops here => p->label = > realloc(p->label,p->label_len*sizeof(char)); > if(NULL == p->label) return(-4); > } > > > And here go perfparse-log2mysql famous last words: > > 154 l = p2-p1; > (gdb) n > 155 if(l>= p->label_len) { > (gdb) > 157 p->label = > realloc(p->label,p->label_len*sizeof(char)); > (gdb) > 156 p->label_len += 20; > (gdb) > 157 p->label = > realloc(p->label,p->label_len*sizeof(char)); > (gdb) > *** glibc detected *** realloc(): invalid next size: 0x09853f98 *** > > Program received signal SIGABRT, Aborted. > 0x006327a2 in _dl_sysinfo_int80 () from /lib/ld-linux.so.2 > (gdb) backtrace full > #0 0x006327a2 in _dl_sysinfo_int80 () from /lib/ld-linux.so.2 > No symbol table info available. > #1 0x006727f5 in raise () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6 > No symbol table info available. > #2 0x00674199 in abort () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6 > No symbol table info available. > #3 0x006a64ea in __libc_message () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6 > No symbol table info available. > #4 0x006ae8c2 in _int_realloc () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6 > No symbol table info available. > #5 0x006af786 in realloc () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6 > No symbol table info available. > #6 0x002ff067 in perf_get_next (data=0x98408b8, p=0x98409e8) at > log_parser.c:157 > p1 = 0x772820 "\001" > p2 = 0x9853f98 "" > l = Variable "l" is not available. > > I've found a link > (http://www.archivesat.com/Linux_C_programming/thread1222039.htm) which > tells about some kind of programming error which "blows away bookkeeping > of the memory allocator".
