O.K. i imported the perfparse sources in CVS. To work with them, you have= =20 to do: export CVS_RSH=3Dssh cvs -z3 -d:ext:dev...@cv...:/cvsroot/perfparse \ co -P perfparse I tagged the sources with the tag "REL_0_105_6" and "START". Internally=20 the cvs module is named _perfparse. This is better if we want to include=20 libraries in our cvs tree. The alias perfparse simply maps tp _perfparse.= =20 If you use cvs -z3 -d:ext:dev...@cv...:/cvsroot/perfparse \ co -P perfparse-all then cvs checks out the phpgui in the subdirectory phpgui. See=20 CVSROOT/modules if interested. If you change something, then simply type "cvs commit", check if only the= =20 files you changed are included and type a meaningful message. If someone=20 else changed something, then type "cvs update -dP" in your checked out=20 sources. Hope this helps. Happy coding. Martin, send me your sourceforge username to get write access to the=20 cvs repository. I haven't visited the perfparse page for a while, but imho the wiki is a bit to complex and the install guide should be reviewed. Perhaps these factors make the project look unmaintained and reject new users. Dear group, My self and Yves are not able to release software for PP at the current time. The challenges of a young family is too much for my self. Yves is currently working on unrelated projects. We are aware that there are some excellent patchs which have been offered. None of which we want to loose. We have all put in so much work to PP that is would be a terrible shame to let the project die. So I am asking from Garry, Alex, Flo, Bruno, Martin and all others who have contributed work. Whether any of you would consider managing PP and releasing new versions with submitted patches. With support from Yves, my self and the rest of us. There is still so much to do! So this is realy a job advert: Open Source Project Manager needed. Managing PerfParse, a viable successful and popular open source project. For any person or persons who wants to have a turn at managing an OS Project. As done by Eric Raymond who then made a fortune from his books. It also makes a very good foot-note onto a Resume. But the people I have worked with over the last year have made this job worth everything. Regards, Ben Clewett. |

Hi, i'm trying to use perfparse with postgresql for storage. The first compile fails because there was a var (numberOfRows) undefined. After defining this var in cgi_raw_report.c, the compile was successfull. But now i have another problem. The storage-module doesnt work. This is the error-message after starting perfparse-log2postgresql: 2005/07/12 16:37:59 [ storage.c:61 9154 ] storage_postgresql module failed to load (msg='/usr/local/nagios/lib/libpp_storage_postgresql.so: undefined symbol: iSQLCount') Does anybody have an solution for this? :) Greetings, Martin __________________________________________________________ Mit WEB.DE FreePhone mit hoechster Qualitaet ab 0 Ct./Min. weltweit telefonieren! http://freephone.web.de/?mc=021201 |

Hi, i wrote a README and i hope this helps people to install my PHP UI. You can download a snaphot with basic functionality here: http://wiki.perfparse.org/tiki-list_file_gallery.php?galleryId=2 it can be installed without changing anything else in your perfparse installation. Feedback welcome Florian Gleixner |

Hi List! I use PP 0.105.6 and I have the following observations: 1. After I click one of the options under "Administartion Menu" there is only a "Return to main menu" link int he top of the screen. I suggest a "Return to the Administration menu" link. It would be very helpful. 2.When I choose "View Raw Plugin Data" the following ordering arrows did not work: Service Up and Down, Last Check Up, Plugin Output Up. I tested id with IE 6 SP2 and Netscape 7. In these scenarios I got back a horizontal line only. I hope the above bugs (?) can be repaired easily. Bye, Tamas! |

Back from holidays... And a lot of mails to read... > A more important notice: > I check the battery capacity of my UPS. Nagios send an alarm, if it is = below > 79% (this is the crtitical value). However in PP, under the "View and G= raph PP does not work when higher values are OK and lower values are CRIT. Thi= s is a major bug in Perfparse, we know it, and fixing it needs to rewrite a lot of per= fparse. The parser is already fixed and send correct values to the stoage_modules. Th= e mysql storage_module is not ready yet because we have to change the database sc= hema, for this and for speed purpose. This is a big piece of work, and Ben works on it (= when he has time, which is not the case these days) > May I suggest a switch, radio button or anything else, that changes PP'= s > behavior to consider value above the critical threshold as good, and va= lue > below the critical threshold as bad. No, because nagios sends data that do not need such a button, and because= the parser of pp already understands well those data. The problem is only in the storag= e module. Hi List! Sorry for my earlier postings (no data in PP's DBS). It was because of a bug in Nagiois and not PP and not my fault. Today my sytem started to work. I noticed that - unlike in Nagios- in PP a host can only be a member of just one host group! I would like, if it can be a member as much hostgroup as I like. A more important notice: I check the battery capacity of my UPS. Nagios send an alarm, if it is below 79% (this is the crtitical value). However in PP, under the "View and Graph Binary Data" menu this service has red background, because battery capacity is 100%, which is above the critical value. I have more services which behavior is similar to the above. May I suggest a switch, radio button or anything else, that changes PP's behavior to consider value above the critical threshold as good, and value below the critical threshold as bad. Sorry, but I'm not a programmer, just a fun of PP:) Thank you very much! Bye, Tamas! |

Hi List! I have three suggestions. 1. If there is no purgeable data in the database, the perfparse-db-purge produce some output, which cron does not "like". I did the following in my crontab: # Purge PerfParse database. 50 10 * * * root /usr/local/nagios/bin/perfparse-db-purge 1>>/var/log/nagios/nagios.log 2>&1 Of course someone can replace the log file with /dev/null to supress every output. 2. I installed PP with method#3. According to the documentation I created a script, which I run via crontab every 15 minutes. This can be done under Linux in the following way: # Run PerfParse every 15 minutes to update Nagios graphs. */15 * * * * root /usr/local/nagios/scriptek/PeriodicUserLogParse.sh Note */15 is the first entry and not 15!!! 3. The example script in the docu is not complete. If there is no file, than mv create output, which cron does not "like". My modified script is the following: #!/bin/sh PerfParseDir=/usr/local/nagios mvCMD=/bin/mv catCMD=/bin/cat rmCMD=/bin/rm if [ -s {$PerfParseDir}/var/perfdata.log ] then $mvCMD {$PerfParseDir}/var/perfdata.log ${PerfParseDir}/var/perfdata.log1 $catCMD ${PerfParseDir}/var/perfdata.log1 | ${PerfParseDir}/bin/perfparse-log2mysql -c ${PerfParseDir}/etc/perfparse.cfg $rmCMD {$PerfParseDir}/var/perfdata.log1 else exit 1 fi I hope I can help somebody with the above things. Hi List! Yesterday I installed PP 0.105.6 on Debian Woody 3.1. In the /usr/local/nagios/etc/perfparse.cfg I found the following: ... # Server managment (perfparsed only) : # ==================================== Server_Port = 1976 ... # Perfparsed server managment : # ============================= Server_Port = "1976" I think this can be because I manged to make PP successfully after many tries and I didn't do make clean among these tries. But if not mayb this is an error. Thanks in advance, Tamas! |

Hi Yves and Listmembers! I'm afraid I mispelled the utility name. So my question is about Nagiostats. Accoring to Nagios 2.0 documentation: "A utility called nagiostats is included in the Nagios distribution. It is compiled and installed along with the main Nagios daemon. The nagiostats utility allows you to obtain various information about a running Nagios process. You can obtain information either in human-readable or MRTG-compatible format." Please see the following link: http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/2_0/nagiostats.html So it provides performance data about Nagios operation and not about plugins. Is PP capable of represent the same data? I'm sorry the typo. Thanks in advance, Tamas! -----Original Message----- From: Yves [mailto:yme...@pe...] Sent: Wednesday, February 16, 2005 10:39 AM To: Ben Clewett Cc: Horvath Tamas; per...@li... Tamas, please subscribe to perfparse-devel mailing list for a while if you want to follow the thinking. > Sorry, nagiostat and PerfParse use different data storage. At the > moment, one or the other. There should be no reasons to have the same data storage. Nagios is the monitoring tool that writes status.dat and send data to perfparse. nagiostat seems to be only a parser for status.dat. Because perfparse gets the same data as the ones that nagios stores into status.dat (and gets more, a lot more), perfparse should be able to generate such reports too, without the help of nagiostat. For that reason, I think that perfparse will never use nagiostat to parse status.dat. When I say perfparse, understand the parser of perfparse. However, we can think perfparse has 2 sides. On one side, the parser (you know my opinion now). On the other side, the GUI. What about the GUI calling nagiostat to generate graphs and draw the data from nagiostat ? Why having the GUI connected to only the perfparse parser ? Why not connect the GUI to other tools, perfparsed and its database, but also nagiostat ? But this is only an idea, to make developers think. I don't know if this is a good or bad idea. Maybe having a menu, with options to redirect to the perfparse GUI, to some nagiostat GUI, and to the nagios CGI is a better idea ? > I don't use nagiostat so I cannot comment on the ability of this system, > if there are other members who can comment on how it compares, I would > be interested in knowing my self :) Try to know what nagiostat exactly does, and if perfparsed/storage modules/perfparse GUI can do the same or if it should call nagiostat. You may want to go to wiki.perfparse.org and vote for FreeBSD. These polls will give us a good idea of what people use, what they want, and where we need to develop in the future :) >>I appreciate a lot the summary feature and I'd like to know if it's >>planned a graphical representation and, if yes, if it's planned in a >>short-range or middle-range time. > > > I let Ben, Tim and others to answer this question. Thanks to Tim for giving us the data. I plan two graphical representations of this: 1. A pie-chart showing proportion of OK,WARN,CRITICAL,UNKNOWN from the total's line. 2. A histergram showing the percent of each of the four states over the selected time period. Yves and my self are discussing methods of rewriting our 'perfchart' program to make more generic. When we have agreed, my self (or somebody else?) can have a go at these. I also plan to use Tim's data to complete an Outage Report. This will display data for a group of Hosts, Services, Groups or All data. Within this collection you will get a summary for the time period, and a overall summary. Again with the same two graphics. I think that this Outage Report will really give PP a powerful feature. This is because this is often a model used by IT managers to check quality of their network. The bottom line on quality is the outage report. I note every service I pay for always quotes the '99.99%' figure. Well, now people using PP can prove it! If we can give that for all services for a whole years data, this is something very powerful. All this summary work also needs to be completed for PostgreSQL, which is currently lacking this ability. Regards, Ben. |

So I wrote this little patch (in attach) that > create the pipe with prw-rw---- permissions... > I think was the author intention to create a group writable pipe, > otherwise don't care about this patch. Perfparse creates a pipe with prw-rw---- permissions because I consider t= hat some users can run perfparse as "perfparse" user and nagios as "nagios" user, both i= n the same group. It seems to be what you want. Your problem is a umask problem, and I think this should be set in your e= nvironment. Some users like you need a permissive umask like 006. Others prefer a res= trictive umask like 066. And I use the usual 022 umask. There are 2 ways to do it : a config option to specify what permissions t= o use (a lot of work) or use "umask" on the command line (nothing to do in perfparse). I think that most admins will prefer to use umask on the command line bec= ause it's a common way to restrict permissions. If you need a specific umask for perf= parse, this is easy to do : #!/bin/sh umask 006 perfparsed & Thanks for the patch anyways : it helped at least to understand precisely= your problem :) > I appreciate a lot the summary feature and I'd like to know if it's > planned a graphical representation and, if yes, if it's planned in a > short-range or middle-range time. Hello folks! First of all, I want to congratulate you on the great job doing... I'm currently using nagios 1.2 and perfparse 0.105.5 on a test environment on a FreeBSD 5.3, monitoring some host and servicies. I chose the pipe method for perfparse and ran perfparsed as root, but I noticed that perfparse create the pipe with prw-r----- permissions; as I run nagios as unprivileged user, it wasn't able to write to this pipe... I take a look at the source code and noticed that perfparse try to create a pipe group writable, but can't do because of some restrictive general options set. So I wrote this little patch (in attach) that create the pipe with prw-rw---- permissions... I think was the author intention to create a group writable pipe, otherwise don't care about this patch. I appreciate a lot the summary feature and I'd like to know if it's planned a graphical representation and, if yes, if it's planned in a short-range or middle-range time. Daniele |
