Debian Update Schedule

cavy

In answer to a question on our old forum, where the OP asked they were not getting the updates they expected, similar to their Ubuntu experience.

We are using Debian Stable branch which has 10 (ten) major updates within its first two years from its launch date, that being circa July 2021 starting at version 11.0, as of the 18th January 2022, there was the second major update bringing it up to version 11.2. This is how Debian structure their Stable branch and utilises software for longer than is practiced by Ubuntu, who actually use Debian "sid", being the testing branch of Debian, thus requires constant updates and upgrades, to keep it stable.

When Debian 11 Bullseye has all 10 major updates circa 2023, it will receive security updates for another 3 years when it will reach its EOL circa 2026.

But that is not the end, as with all Debian installs, it only requires a few selected edits to fully upgrade your system to the next iteration of Debian which will be Bookworm from the summer of 2023 onwards. Thus install and eventually buy a new computer when it reaches its EOL span.

At the end of the day, with OS'es, it is horses for courses. Or that childhood nursery rhyme of the Hare and Tortoise.
