The Asus C300m chromebook was bought ultra cheap as school surplus when the Google 6 year support package run out. It has a 2.16ghz processor, 1.8GB ram and 16GB rom with a 16GB sd card in a slot. It is used when travelling as a low value item which won't cause a lot of grief if lost. It previously had been converted to linux using the "mr chromebook" process and had been running Gallium OS until that was dropped.

I had tried installing lubuntu, xubuntu, zite lite, puppy linux and a couple of others. Puppy linux wouldn't install on the hard drive and the other OS's had a very irritating problem on audio, where it would start buzzing after a few minutes use. I stumbled on a report that some chromebook hardware has an audio conflict with Ubuntu versions. Installing debian based Peppermint bypassed the audio problem.

Installation went well. I installed Gnome software store, Firefox ESR, abiword, gnumeric, rhythmbox, VLC, and a couple of map editing programs I use for work. That used about 11GB of the eMMC memory.

Because the keyboard is in US English format I needed some more symbols so I used the "Language package" facility to add GB English and Norwegian then, through synaptic package manager, added XFCE-xkb-plugin to obtain a panel applet showing which language keyboard layout is selected. I then downloaded pictures of the different key layouts.

As chromebooks have fewer keys available I had to do a bit of trial and error to discover the caps-lock is "right alt and search key" and that the Network Manager icon in the panel becomes invisible if you change from dark theme to light theme.

It's all been good so far, and I have a usable netbook which cost about $20.
