i have mac os x 10.3.4 disks which boot fine (from cd and image) but after partitioning the drive(image) the OSX installer says 'You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. You cannot startup your computer using this volume"

Have you tried to download a pre-partioned MacOSX image?
