currently using lubuntu 15.04.
my desktop background is set to use a solid color
when select a different theme using the "Customize Look and Feel" panel, the desktop background changes (turns to gray)
Thank you very much for reporting your issue. I would like to know if the desktop is managed by PCManFM (which is default in Lubuntu) or do you have reconfigured that?

I would also like to add that the symptom of the cursor picking up a "block" of the background image when a an icon is dragged from one place to another does not happen consistently.
