Bugs item #1041403, was opened at 2004-10-06 07:15 Message generated for change (Comment added) made by tir-gwaith You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=384719&aid=1041403&group_id=25576 Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Vagabond (vagabondx) Assigned to: Devon Jones (soulcatcher) Summary: Java5 - Still Not King Initial Comment: I tried to use pcgen with the final version of Java 5, but it's still freezing after I press the new character button. I already mentioned this when beta 1 came out and someone told me that I should wait for the final. Well, here it is. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Andrew McDougall (tir-gwaith) Date: 2004-10-07 07:37 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=208239 you mean flagging Devon, not Doug, Eric. Your French Canadian typing again?? :p ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Eric Beaudoin (ericbeaudoin) Date: 2004-10-07 07:09 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=324612 Well, in this case, I would say not before Java 5 becomes the default distribution. I tried it yesterday and java.com still download 1.4.2. In fact, there is not even mention of Java 5 on the site. We go slowly on new Java version because the last time around (1.3 to 1.4), it took a lot of work to convert the code and it also aleniated a large portion of users. Java 1.4 was not available for the Mac. When we some work was done on the code to run under 1.4, 1.3 stoped working. We had to roll back the changes. So we go slowly here because the last time we had a bad experience and don't want to repeat it. The thing that will really drives the adoption of Java 5 will be the need for functionnality that are not present in Java 1.4. For now, I don't believe any such new functionnality has been identified by the coders. All that being said, you are welcome to roll up your sleves and find a solution to your freeze problem. If there is a way to fix it without having negative impact on the ability of the PCGen code to run under Java 1.4, I'm sure the fix would be implemented in the code base. I'm flagging Doug so he can add his comment if he has any. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Vagabond (vagabondx) Date: 2004-10-07 02:36 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1059861 The name of version 1.5 is officially changed to 5 (J2SE 5.0). What does stable and mature mean actually? After beta1, beta2, rc and a final version (about 4-5 month, or so) I think it is good enough. But I think it's enough of reasoning. It's your right to change or not, and it's mine to disagree. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Eric Beaudoin (ericbeaudoin) Date: 2004-10-06 16:55 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=324612 I guess you mean Java 1.5. I'm not the final authority here but as far as I know, no effort will be put into PCGEN to move it to 1.5 until after 1.5 is both stable and mature. Right now, the Sun's recommended version is 1.4.2 and that's what PCGEN is developped with. I would say, ask again in 6 months and we'll see. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Vagabond (vagabondx) Date: 2004-10-06 12:19 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1059861 I know that, but telling the people that they should use the older version or keep both versions on their pc is strange. I think. Somebody commented the beta bug report with the actual cause of this problem. All I'd like to see some effort to solve this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Andrew McDougall (tir-gwaith) Date: 2004-10-06 08:03 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=208239 PCGen is coded in 1.4.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Vagabond (vagabondx) Date: 2004-10-06 07:35 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1059861 Hmm, I seem to be offensive though I didn't want to be. All I wanted to say is that this should be higher priority from now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=384719&aid=1041403&group_id=25576 |
