jujutsunerd has created some code to use the new FOP (see ticket 1634879).
I'll be checking that out, maybe we can still get it in 5.12 this way.

I have tried this out a bit, but shelved it because using the new FOP
library will require major rewrites (i.e. rework each library function
call) as the new API is not at all compatible to the old API. I still have
this on my radar though.

The new API has been set as stable in FOP 0.92 and I'm told
this supports UTF-8 too. I'll try and see if I can adapt the
code to the new API.

It does not (.90 alpha), there is no indication from hte FOP
team that this will change in the near future (see FOP
website for details as to why). - K

@karianna: currently we can't export unicode characters to
pdf output sheets, because the fop library seems to support
only latin-1 encoding. This was originated by a russian user
who would have like to be able to export cyrillic characters
to his pdf output sheet.
