im using the 20091103 snapshot on ubuntu lucid.
the fab-author option is not used for the gerber export, neither when specified in the command line nor via the preferences file.
it works for exporting .ps (where it is used on the last/fab page).

imho the default should NOT be the user name anyway. i consider my username private data. it's good to be able to add an author tag to files, but not to have a non-anonymous default. this is especially problematic for the .pcb files, since they save the username regardless the fab-author setting by design.
