Hello,

I recently started receiving the following error. Password Safe opens up just fine. Any suggestions?

Failed to load Autotype support DLL (wrong version?).
Autotype for Launch of a Browser or Running a command is disabled.

Thanks in advance,

Regards,
Rudy

The DLL (pws_at.dll) hasn't been changed for ages - it is still version 1.1.0, although it recompiled whenever a new release is generated just in case.

As long as it is still in the same directory as the PasswordSafe executable (pwsafe.exe along with the virtual keyboard pws_osk.dll), it should be fine.

Have you changed your Anti-Virus software recently (or maybe its database has been recently updated to believe that this DLL is a risk) as the only option I can think of is that the AV system is stopping it being loaded.

      Thank you so much.

No. We've actually had to disable AV for other compatibility issues so none is running.

I'll look and see if the DLL's are present. Is there any way to download and replace them if they are in fact missing? Or perhaps I should reinstall?

      Thanks,
      Rudy

All files you indicated appear to be in place. Please see screenshot. What would be appropriate action? Perhaps reinstall? We're currently on v3.32.

Is there a paid version of the software so we can get phone support?

You could just download the zip file rather than the install file and extract all the files into a temporary directory. You ca then copy all the files across to the PasswordSafe directory to ensure that they are all in step. I would recommedn the latest - 3.38.2.

Hm. What has changed around the time you started getting the warnings?

This error has returned with version 3.60. It was not in 3.58 and previous versions. Running on Windows 10 (x64) natively. What information can I provide to diagnose?

I get the same Autotype/DLL-related message with pwsafe V3.41, running under wine and Ubuntu 16.04.2.

When I tried AutoType on an entry, the function unsurprisingly did not work.

Is a a fix possible for this case? Many thanks as always.

    What version of Wine?

I've tried the latest Password Safe v3.42.1 under wine in Manjaro Linux a few times and I didn't get any error about failing to load the Autotype support DLL.

Nevertheless, Autotype had never worked for me.

In the Wine console when I try to Autotype I get the following two messages:
    fixme: keyboard:BlockInput (1): stub
    fixme: keyboard:BlockInput (0): stub

So it appears Wine is lacking certain implemtations required for Password to work without issues. The latest Manjaro update has wine 2.9 and this still occurs.

There are a bunch of other Wine issues
I've noticed that also that affects Password Safe working well.

    Somethings that work:
    - Opening database and using most Password Safe functionality
    - Dragbar functionality
    - Copy and Paste

    Somethings that don't work
    - yubikey
    - dragging entry from one group to another will leave the entry in the original group and create another in the new group (This is Wine issue because I see the fixme pop up in the Wine console)
    - if the database locks (for example on idle timeout), it cannot be unlocked because the keyboard input into the password dialog doesn't work. The application has to be killed.
    - Editing entry works but there is some fixme messages in the Wine console related to crypto, for example,
    fixme: crypt:CryptUnprotectMemory: stub
    fixme: crypt:CryptProtectMemory: stub

So These look to me like in memory protection is therefore not working under Wine.

Other than these it seems to generally works okay under Wine.

I am using wine 2.9, but I think I figured out why the error message. I was using a shortcut from the desktop, actually a link to the exe file (yes, it was a bad idea). If I launch from a console from pwsafe's directory, or if I build a proper .desktop file with a cd; command, I do not get the error. In the end I used WLCreator which takes care of all this and more.

You are right, in this setup the autotyping implementation probably lies with wine. Is it reasonable to expect a compatibility layer like wine to emulate SendKeys from one OS to another?

Wine Internet Explorer is part of Wine, so I was expecting Autotype to work into Wine's Internet Explorer, but it didn't. I'm not sure if Autotype using Password Safe under Wine can be made to work into a native Linux browser like Firefox. At least the the dragbar and cut&paste does work into native Linux applications. If you are so inclinded, it might help to submit bug reports for the "fixme" errors you see in the Wine console to https://bugs.winehq.org/.
