Hi, This is to announce the release of PasswordSafe version 3.25. This release has a couple of nice new features, as described below, some bug fixes, as well as support for: Chinese (full), Dutch (partial), French (full), German (full), Korean (partial), Russian (full), Swedish (full), Danish (partial), Polish (partial), and Spanish (full). (If you're interested in supporting your language, please let me know.) As of this release, we're unlinking the release cycle of the Linux Beta versions from the Window releases. See the end of this announcement for more information regarding the Linux releases. Thanks to: - Bert, Bjorn, Francois, Fred, freedoctor, Jose, Karlo, Kees, pm_kan, poserpro and Seunggyun for their translation efforts and feedback on this release, - The PasswordSafe testers for vetting this release, - DK for his work and patience, - Sauravg and pm_kan for their work on the Linux beta, - All the users who provide feedback, bug reports, suggestions and the occasional donation... New Features for 3.25 ======================= Dutch installation instructions thank to Kees, and a first (incomplete) Dutch translation of the application thank to Bert, Kees and Fred. [] Korean texts in the application and installer program thanks to Seunggyun. [] Poserpro has provided Traditional Chinese texts for the installer program. [] New View menu option: Show entries with Expiry. This is useful for displaying entries with passwords that are expired or about to expire. Changes to Existing Features in 3.25 ====================================== [3171962] The password expiration warning mechanism now checks for expiration daily. The display of expired and almost-expired entries has been redesigned, allowing users to update the entry directly. When an expired password is changed, the expiry date will be cleared unless there is a recurring password expiry interval, in which case a new expiry date will be calculated. [3131945] Double-clicking on the system tray icon when PasswordSafe is not minimized now brings it to front, instead of minimizing. [3131935] Rename of an entry or group in the Tree View can now only be performed via the Rename shortcut (default value F2), using the Edit menu or the right-click context menu. Edit in place by double clicking the entry is no longer allowed as, most of the time, this was not the desired action. [] Filtered views are now updated when an entry's edited, e.g., if an entry is edited such that it no longer satisfies the filter's criteria, it will be removed from the display. [] The Russian online help has been totally rewritten and updated, thanks to pm_kan. [] pm_kan has updated the Russian texts. [] The Spanish texts have been updated thanks to Jose. [] Karlo has updated the German texts. [] Francois has updated the French texts. [] Bjorne has updated the Swedish version. [] freedoctor has updated the Chinese texts. Bugs fixed in 3.25 ==================== [3194472] Fix new group creation location. When a Group is selected, then selecting 'Add Group' from the Edit menu or from the context menu displayed by right clicking on that Group, the new group will be a child of the selected group. However, when using the context menu displayed on right clicking on 'white space' below the last entry/group displayed, the group will be created at the topmost level. [3165889] No longer crashes if search starts with Shift-Enter (search backwards). [3148701] Windows installer will now refuse to install on Win2K, referring user to last supported version on that OS (3.18). [3115760] Window view is now saved and restored if the user uses the Windows "Show Desktop" feature. [] No longer crashes when doing an Undo after a Merge. [] Ensure Undo/Redo honour the changes to the display of the original change. The U3 and PasswordSafe2Go versions will be updated soon and available from https://www.plimus.com/jsp/buynow.jsp?contractId=2031906 and https://www.plimus.com/jsp/buynow.jsp?contractId=2880062 respectively. Currently, this path is hard-coded. Sorry, I hadn't noticed that the makefiles don't do this yet. I also missed the fact that you built it yourself and didn't actually install a prebuilt binary which includes the help file. Thanks, Saurav. |

Actually nscd just intercepts various library calls like gethostbyname() etc. So the pswafe help facility under Linux should work fine without it running. > In other words, it doesn't seem related to the issues you've reported, as > far as I can tell. Yeah. I think this symptom is a red herring too--the cause is probably something very different. (See my subsequent msg.) steve -- |

nscd is a generic caching service for access to "databases" such as
/etc/passwd, /etc/groups, etc.
My guess is that libc is trying to access it to save some time in the course
of a call to getpwname(), getpwuid() or something similar.
The non-existence of the local socket file probably just means that the ncsd
daemon isn't running on your machine, which shouldn't cause a failure of the
library call, just (perhaps) a slower response.
In other words, it doesn't seem related to the issues you've reported, as
far as I can tell.
Cheers,
Rony

Strace says there's no relevant open() calls and it's trying to connect to
nscd's unix socket, which doesn't exist:
chive(rader): strace pwsafe
[...]
30723 socket(PF_FILE, SOCK_STREAM, 0) = 5
30723 connect(5, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path="/var/run/nscd/socket"...}, 110)
= -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
Weird. Googling "wxwidgets nscd" didn't give me a lead. Does that ring
a bell? If not let me know, and I'll add some debug printfs to get a
better clue.

I generally avoid reading C++ code but... src/ui/wxWidgets/pwsafeapp.cpp reads...
wxString helpfile(wxFileName(towxstring(pws_os::gethelpdir()), wxT("help.zip")).GetFullPath());
...and I certainly don't have this "help.zip" file installed... in fact it
doesn't exist in the build directory... maybe I just need to get or build
that file and install it somewhere? HTH.

Which window/dialog? You should not have to do anything special to get it to work, but can you please see if wxUSE_WXHTML_HELP is defined in your "/usr/lib/wx/include/*" or wherever your distro keeps installs the setup.h file(s) for wxWidgets. In the debug build (which you couldn't build), you probably would get a messagebox if you tried to bring up help for a dialog/window for which we don't have any help content yet. But in all other cases, at least the main page should come up. Thanks, Saurav. |

Hi, WRT RHEL5: the Fedora notes come very close but 1) wxGTK0devel is really wxGTK-devel in README.LINUX.DEVELOPERS.txt and 2) RHEL5's wxGTK-devel doesn't support "wx-config --debug=yes --unicode=yes" so just "make" fails--the workaround is to use "make CONFIG=unicoderelease". The alternate browser config thing didn't work for me but my workaround is to use export BROWSER=mozilla (which tells /usr/bin/xdg-open to use "mozilla" seamonkey.) The autotype didn't work with my window manager that doesn't directly support the CLIPBOARD buffer (vtwm). I worked around this problem by adding wxTheClipboard->UsePrimarySelection(TRUE); to src/ui/wxWidgets/pwsclip.cpp The help system doesn't work. Seems like it requires Windows and Visual Studio. Can one get it working under Linux? If so, how? steve -- |

The released version of PasswordSafe on Windows is now built using Visual Studio 2010 (VC10), although the Visual Studio 2005 (VC8) project files are still in the repository and supported for now. In order to stop builds of each version interfering with builds of the other, revision 3863 changed the target build directory for VC8 from 'build' to "build8" leaving "build" reserved for VC10. The files that have this hard-coded and are in the repository have been altered by this update. However, developers using Visual Studio 2005 *MUST* re-run the "configure8.vbs" script in "/src/ui/windows" and/or "src/ui/wxWidgets" to update variables used by Visual Studio 2005 in order to ensure that their projects build correctly. For those using Visual Studio to build the BETA wxWidgets version on Windows, as well as re-running "configure8.vbs", they should note that, as VC10 is now the default, the corresponding wxWidgets static libraries are excepted to be in the directory "/lib/vc_lib" and the VC8 built wxWidgets static libraries are now expected to be in the directory "/lib/vc8_lib". Previously, vc_lib was expected to have the VC8 built wxWidgets static libraries and vc10_lib the VC10 equivalent. The file: "\wxWidgets_VS2010_Updates\build\msw\wxBuild_wxWidgets.bat" can be used to build the VC8 and VC10 static libraries - including the 64-bit VC10 versions. David |

Karlo, I don't think we have any plans to use any of the MFC enhancements brought in with VS2008 or VS2010 (mainly the Office type ribbon) - so this means that PasswordSafe should be able to be built with VS2005 for quite a while. As I said, the only problem will be when new source files are added or removed as only the VS2010 project files will be updated. However, as you have update access to the SVN repository, when you notice that it no longer builds because of this, you could add them to your project and commit the changes. We are working on the 64-bit build [currently the Windows build seems to work but there are still issues in the new Linux build being worked on], whilst ensuring that the current 32-bit build is not impacted. This will only be using VS2010 but, if you are happy to only build the 32-bit version using VS2005, then that should not be a problem to you. Hope this helps, David |

Unfortunately, Visual Studio 2010 Express Edition does not support MFC and there is no longer a cheaper Standard Edition. However, Express should build the beta wxWidgets version. I think we can keep the VS2005 project files and I was going to change them to put their output in a 'build8' directory to keep them separate from VS2010 builds anyway. The problem will be that no one will update the project files when new source code is added or removed. However, I would expect developers still using VS2005 to be able to do that for themselves when they find that the build fails due to missing object code. Microsoft no longer support VS2005 or prior versions. Currently supported versions are VS2008 and VS2010 but we skipped VS2008. Hi, It seems that 3.24 had a nasty last-minute bug that crept in, causing it to crash when unlocking or switching databases. The good news is that this was promptly reported, and a fix is now available in release 3.24.1. Thanks to donw146, gillum, john886 and mrttoo for reporting the problem in an effective manner, and to DK for his quick fix. (The problem was Windows-specific - the Linux version is unaffected) Release 3.24.1 replaces 3.24, and can be downloaded from: https://sourceforge.net/projects/passwordsafe/files/ (Newest Files): http://sourceforge.net/projects/passwordsafe/files/passwordsafe/3.24.1/pwsaf e-3.24.1.exe/download (installer) http://sourceforge.net/projects/passwordsafe/files/passwordsafe/3.24.1/pwsaf e-3.24.1-bin.zip/download (zip file with binaries, for those who don't like installers) http://sourceforge.net/projects/passwordsafe/files/passwordsafe/3.24.1/pwsaf e-3.24.1.msi/download (Microsoft installer) http://sourceforge.net/projects/passwordsafe/files/passwordsafe/3.24.1/pwsaf e-3.24.1-src.zip/download (source code) SHA-1 checksums: 321aaa773ee252fe7853d5adf4361c0e1b0e0aab *pwsafe-3.24.1.exe 73d1d7f5b329db29c7c8190dd301470731c75cda *pwsafe-3.24.1.msi 870164d2ab6b0c0a8c52df98577a01ad93ac685b *pwsafe-3.24.1-bin.zip a6de247066de5653409d631f367a634b9fa2846a *pwsafe-3.24.1-src.zip Note that this release also includes PGP/GPG signature files of the respective packages. Hi, This is to announce the release of PasswordSafe version 3.24. This release has a couple of nice new features, as described below, some bug fixes, as well as support for: Chinese (full), French (full), German (full), Russian (full), Swedish (full), Danish (partial), Polish (partial), and Spanish (full). (If you're interested in supporting your language, please let me know.) Thanks to: - Bjorn, Francois, Jose, Karlo and pm_kan for their translation efforts and feedback on this release, - The PasswordSafe testers for vetting this release, - DK for his work and patience, - Sauravg and pm_kan for their work on the Linux beta - All the users who provide feedback, bug reports, suggestions and the occasional donation... New Features for 3.24 ===================== [3111585] User can now duplicate Groups. Aliases and shortcuts referring to base entries outside this group will still point to their respective bases. Those referring to base entries within the group will then point to the new copy. [3065107] Confirm Delete dialog for an entry now shows the entry's details. [3062854] Advanced Dialog Options settings are saved for a session to allow re-use. The following functions use the this dialog and their settings are saved separately: Merge, Compare, Export to Text, Export to XML, Synchronize and Find Toolbar. [3062809] Add "Add Group" to Toolbar. [3062788] Add "Add New Entry" menu item to additional context menus. [] Online help is now available in Spanish, thanks to Jose. Bugs fixed in 3.24 ================== [3121006] Can now change number of databases remembered independently of the value of the number of last used entries remembered in System Tray menu. [3084401] When database is locked, clipboard is cleared and the hotkey works. [3069250] PasswordSafe now remembers the selected entry on Lock After Idle. [3065827] Uninstall fails gracefully when invoked with pwsafe running. [3062850] Dialogs are now correctly closed if open when the workstation locks (with preference "Lock password database on workstation lock" set), enabling the application to be opened again. [3062769] Groups list in Add/Edit dialog box no longer "remembers" groups from previously opened database. [3058043] Hexadecimal password policy now correctly saved. [] Spanish translations for installer and application updated - thanks to Jose. Hi, It's been a while since our last release, partially because no major bugs have popped up in 3.23, and also because we've been busy on several variants (nothing to announce - yet). Anyway, 3.24 is mainly a bugfix release, with some minor new features, the most visible being: 1. Groups can now be duplicated (New entry in popup menu when a group is selected) 2. Advanced dialog settings are now persistent across sessions. In terms of GUI, this means that the "Advanced..." button has been replaced by a checkbox, which is marked if there are advanced criteria defined. This is in the Merge, Compare, Export to Text, Export to XML, Synchronize and Find dialog boxes. The Linux versions have also made nice progress, definitely worth checking out! Thanks to dk, sauravg and pm_kan for their work on this release! I'd really like to get this version out sooner rather than later. Translators: Please let me know if you think you need more than a week to update the texts. In order to bring some consistency to the project naming convention, I intend to rename "corelib" to "core". This will mean we will no longer have "corelib.lib" (which has always seemed wrong to me) but instead have "core.lib". This is consistent with "os.lib". I am ready to commit these changes and I have tested new builds with VS2005 and VS2010 - both MFC and wxWidgets builds on Windows. The new Linux build has also been verified. However, just in case anyone has a major issue with this change, I am delaying it by 48 hours so that they may get back to me [via this mailing list] detailing the problem it will cause them. If you do have issues, please reply to this list by 20:00 GMT on 24 November 2010. Many thanks, David |

Hi, After some testing, I'm committing a merge of Andrey's work on 64-bit build support (branches/x86_64) into the main trunk. Most of Andrey's work is changing typecasts into C++ *_cast<>() syntax, which help search for them when narrowing down type-related issues. I've built and tested the Windows version using VS2005 and VS2010, and it seems to work OK. I have NOT build wx under windows with this, nor (yet) the 32 bit Linux version. I know this is a bit of a wide change, but I think the sooner we do this in the trunk, the better off we'll be in the long term. Other than that, it looks like we'll have another formal release in a couple of weeks. Cheers, Rony |

Hi, In addition to the regular bug fixes and improvements to PasswordSafe, we've been working on a couple of other things that we'd like to announce: 1. PasswordSafe for Linux Beta This is a port of the same 'core' cryptographic code wrapped around a new, portable, user interface (wxWidgets). What this means is that databases created with the Windows version of PasswordSafe are fully compatible with the Linux port, and vice versa. Many thanks to Saurav, the lead developer for the Linux version, for his time, effort and patience. Ubuntu users can download the beta from http://sourceforge.net/projects/passwordsafe/files/Linux-BETA/passwordsafe-u buntu-0.1-1.deb/download Debian users should download from this link: http://sourceforge.net/projects/passwordsafe/files/Linux-BETA/passwordsafe-d ebian-0.1-1.deb/download Please read the release notes (README.LINUX) for details on how to install this on your machine. 2. PasswordSafe2Go As you may know, I've been offering a version of PasswordSafe tailored for the U3 disk-on-key system. The main advantage of this product is that it packs PasswordSafe and your database on a disk-on-key, making it very convenient for use across several machines. PasswordSafe2Go is a similar product, tailored for use with any disk-on-key, not only U3-enabled devices. Although the 'regular' PasswordSafe can be used on a disk-on-key, both of these products are more suitable for non-expert users who wish to run PasswordSafe from a disk-on-key. You can purchase PasswordSafe2Go from https://www.plimus.com/jsp/buynow.jsp?contractId=2880062 and Passwordsafe for U3 from https://www.plimus.com/jsp/buynow.jsp?contractId=2031906 Cheers, Rony |

Hi, PasswordSafe developers on the Windows platform should take note that as of commit 3638, the default build environment on Windows is Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 (MSVS10). You can still use Visual Studio 2005 (and probably 2008) by opening the pwsafe8.sln solution file with the IDE. For more detail, see README.WINDOWS.DEVELOPERS.html in the source tree. Please write me (or the list) if you've any questions, problems or suggestions regarding the build process or PasswordSafe in general. Many thank to DK for his help in making the transition. Hi, I've uploaded a pre-release version of PasswordSafe 3.23 for final testing. This release has no new major features, mainly bugfixes. The main user-visible fix is that the 'Confirm Deletion' dialog box has been returned, due to user request. There are also some other minor changes, as listed in the release notes. http://pwsafe.org/tmp/3.23pre/pwsafe-3.23pre-bin.zip contains the new binaries. If you prefer, the installer may be downloaded from http://pwsafe.org/tmp/3.23pre/pwsafe-3.23pre.exe Remember that this is a pre-release version: Please make copies of the databases that you use to test this version. If no surprises come up, I'd like to make a formal release towards the end of the month (July). Cheers, Rony |

Hi, This is to announce the release of PasswordSafe version 3.22. This release has a couple of nice new features, as described below, some bug fixes, as well as support for: Danish (full), French (full), German (full), Swedish (full), Russian (full), Chinese (partial), Polish (partial), and Spanish (partial). (If you're interested in supporting your language, please let me know.) Thanks to Rejmond, Karlo, Bjorn, pm_kan, freedoctor and Francois for their translation efforts and feedback on this release. Many thanks to DK for his work and patience, and of course thanks to all the users who provide feedback, bug reports, suggestions and the occasional donation... New Features for 3.22 ===================== [] Support for Danish has been added - thanks to Rejmond for his effort in translating! [2983775] Recently Used Entries are now saved in the database header and so are "persistent". The current Windows user interface limits this to a maximum of the last 25 entries accessed. [2980609] Allow date filters to use relative dates [2979411] A single entry can now be exported to a text or XML file via the Edit menu or right-click context menu. [2957185] Add Synchronize function to the menu options during review of the results of a Compare database operation. [] Validation of databases can now be performed via the Manage menu as well as via the command line flag '-v'. When executed via the menu, it is very similar to opening a new database in that the current open database is closed and the selected database is validated during the open process. [] Allow user to select external editor for Notes field in Add/Edit dialog. [] Add entry size to the available filters to be able view entries. [] Warn users during database open and entry import if there are entries with large text fields (e.g. Notes) that cannot be fully displayed and may be truncated if edited. Changes to Existing Features in 3.22 ==================================== [] Preferences are now saved in the 'normal' per-user directory under Windows. Existing installations will use current preferences, but users can migrate to the new location via Manage->Options->System->Migrate PasswordSafe configuration to user directory. [] New databases will be created by default in "My Safes" directory under "My Documents". Bugs fixed in 3.22 ================== [3004446] Deleting a group of entries works again. [2994118] Swedish version no longer crashes when checking for latest version. [2990734] Changing either whether password history is kept and deleting currently saved history now activates the OK Button. [2990609] Clicking to rename entries is now disabled when database is read-only. [2984527] Database preferences (including the Idle Timer setting) now retained during a locking minimize to the System Tray. [2977941] The password expiry date is now updated during edit if the password is changed either via the Generate button or by the user manually editing it. [2977045] Can now make password expiration date any value from the current date. [2962916] Save toolbar button only enabled if database is R/W and has been changed since last saved. [2962847] Fix password length checking to be between 4 and 1024 during menu Generate Password option & Password Policy setting as per previous releases. [2960709] Entry selected prior to workstation locking is reselected on being restored after unlocking the workstation. [2957933] Ensure that AutoType delay and wait times are not impacted by numeric characters from any entry field substitution. [2951871] Shortcut related menu items now returned to the Edit menu and the "Run Command", "Browse to URL", "Browse to URL + Autotype" and "Send email" functions now work again, when a Shortcut entry is selected. [2897661, 2779654] Group expand/collapse state restored after the database is Locked, Minimized or "AutoType with Minimize" and then Restored. [] Use of External Editor on Notes field from Edit dialog now activates Apply and OK buttons. [] Fix errors if importing an XML file with entries with duplicate unique IDs (UUID elements). Hi,
This is to announce the release of PasswordSafe version 3.21. This release
has a couple of nice new features, as described below, some bug fixes, as
well as support for French (full), German (full), Swedish (full), Russian
(full), Chinese (partial), Polish (partial), and Spanish (partial). If
you're interested in supporting your language, please let me know. Thanks to
Karlo, Bjorn, pm_kan, freedoctor and Francois for their translation efforts
and feedback on this release. Many thanks to DK for his work and patience,
and of course thanks to all the users who provide feedback, bug reports,
suggestions and the occasional donation...
New Features for 3.21
=====================
[2940756] Add "Apply" button to Edit property pages so that intermediate
changes can be saved without closing the Edit property pages.
[2919319] PasswordSafe can now be used as a password generator via the
Manage menu.
[2616175] Allows user to retry finding the original database if not
successfully found the first time.
[] Undo/Redo of changes to the currently open database. Any change to the
database can now be undone and redone, as long as the database is open. This
is similar to the undo/redo feature available in most word processors, and
is activated the same way (Ctrl-Z for undo, Ctrl-Y for redo, or via the Edit
menu).
[] New Synchronize feature (subset of the current Merge function) to allow
changes in the fields of entries of two databases to be synchronised.
Entries with identical Group names, Titles and User names are compared when
syncing. The database selected to be synchronised with the current open
database is now always in read-only mode i.e. Synchronisation is
uni-directional and only entries in the currently open database can be
modified.
Changes to Existing Features in 3.21
====================================
[] When comparing databases, the "other" selected database is now always
opened in read-only mode.
Bugs fixed in 3.21
==================
[2941828] In Add & Edit, changes to the Password Policy take effect
immediately; pressing the Generate button will create a password according
to the new policy, without having to save and re-open the entry.
[2940712] Dragging a group now drags along all its descendants.
[2931428] Password history now displayed correctly in View/Edit.
[2918306, 2816066, 2798788, 2446052, 2837591, 2917066, ...] Re-instate
AutoType via shortcut and when an entry has been selected via the Find
Toolbar.
[2921935] Dragbar now works in List view without needing the mouse to
activate.
[2918849] Fixed icon no longer appearing in taskbar when locking due to
workstation lock and terminal services running.
[2916338] "Edit Base entry" now works for Alias entries as well as for
Shortcuts.
[2913440] Copy/Send Email menu items now correctly activated if email field
is set or 'mailto:' used in URL field.
[2912177] Adding Groups via right-click menu now works again under default
configuration.
[2894100] PasswordSafe window no longer creeps down the screen if the
Windows taskbar is at the top of the screen.
[2818401] AutoType backspace field ('\b') now honoured in both "AutoType"
and "Browse To + AutoType" consistently.
[2431438] When unable to find a previous database via the recently opened
databases on the File menu and the user is given the option to open a
different database or create a new one.
[1751462] After Find Toolbar Advanced dialog is used, the previous Find
results are now reset.
[] Finally fix issues running under pre-XP versions of Windows.
[] Fix issue when changing the displayed columns in List View and then
switching to Tree View.
