Hi,
I'm new on this forum so if I've posted this feature request to the wrong site and/or goofed it up in any way, please advise. I didn't see where else to create a feature request except under the "Create Ticket" menu.
A feature I thought would be useful (that as far as I can determine, does not yet exist) would be to include displaying a count of the total number of password entries in each group. As far as I observe, there is only a count of the total number of password entries for the entire database shown in the bottom-right margin of the main Password Safe window.
Having an easy way of identifying how many entries are in each group would be helpful instead of having to manually open each group and count the number of entries in the group (for those of us who have many groups, anyway). I think it would help when one is deciding on what new groups to create and/or whether to move entries between groups in order to arrange or stream-line one's database, or perhaps when deciding whether to move some groups and/or entries to another database.
One thought was to show the entry count for each group in the group's title, say in parentheses at the end of the group name. Another way might be to have the group entry count appear in a pop-up window by hovering the mouse cursor or doing a right-mouse click on the group name, but the first method would be more convenient as one would see the entry count for all groups up front with no fiddling around with the mouse/mouse cursor.
A second feature request I have is to enable copying any of the old passwords shown in the password history under the "Additional" tab. For my purposes (see below), the present "Copy All" function is a pain in that it copies all passwords in the history along with the time stamp information for each password when all that I want is to copy one of the previous individual passwords by itself.
I sometimes need/want to change passwords on one of my accounts and I need to first enter the old password before being allowed to enter the new password. I need to have the new password available soon afterward, which presumes I have already generated it in Password Safe. The problem is, generating the new password for the same password entry over-writes the existing password and I sometimes forget to copy the existing password before generating the new password. But usually I like to take my time generating new passwords until I find one I like, and worry about copying the old password after I have generated the new password (i.e. "work flow") which can take several minutes, by which point I've clobbered the old password ("What was my old password again?").
I have been resorting to creating a copy of the existing (old) password entry to use as the basis for generating the new password, in order to avoid over-writing the old password before being able to enter it into the "Enter old password" window. I am then able to copy both old and new passwords to the password prompts for the password change dialogue as needed. But then I need to delete the old password entry and rename the new password entry (from "Copy of " the old password entry. It would be less hassle if I could simply copy the old password from the password history without having to do all of the above.
Anyway, just my thoughts/desires.
Cheers!
Dave
Hey Dave,
Re: Second feature
Did you know that you can copy the old password by clicking the corresponding row in the history? It looks like exactly what you asked, doesn't it?
Hi Alexis,
No, I didn't know I could copy an old password in the History merely by
clicking on it. The History only shows the "Copy All" button that copies
everything in the History including the time stamps, so I assumed that
"Copy All" was the only feature available for copying passwords from
History.
Thank-you for getting back to me with the tip - it does exactly what I
want. However, now that I know this feature exists, I note that in order
to use it in the context that my query was based, i.e. to update an
existing password in an online account that first requests you to enter
your existing/about-to-be-old password, one must generate the new
password first, which causes the existing password to get moved into the
password History.
I've been using the "duplicate entry" function to duplicate the entire
existing password entry prior to generating the new password. The new
entry gets the word "(Copy)" tacked onto the existing entry/password
name (which I rename back to the original password entry name after I've
deleted or moved the original/source password entry to another Password
Safe folder. I felt I had to do things this way in order to insure that
I didn't overwrite the existing password when generating the new
password. I didn't see any other way to retain the old password so that
I could still easily copy it to the "Enter existing password" when
updating the online account password.
I went back and re-read the help information built into Password Safe
and sure enough, the "copy password by clicking on it in History" is
described there. I guess I need to read/re-read the built-in help in
more detail since the feature is described there but I missed it. Still,
it would be more intuitive if this feature was a bit more obvious within
the History menu to begin with - say by adding a note (fixed or a
pop-up) to the History menu, perhaps one of those "?" icons that shows a
pop-up note when one hovers the mouse cursor over it?
In any case, thank-you again for getting back to me with the tip.
Knowing this copy password feature exists will be of help going forward
by eliminating the several copy/paste steps I currently use, anytime I
need to update an existing online password.
Cheers!

#898I like the idea of displaying the number of entries under a group.
implemented in commit 1b0b8cbac, will be in next release.
Hi Rony,
I like this idea. iOS apps for iPhone/iPad iOS that support Password Safe database format have had this feature for some time.
Can you say something about how it is going to work and look? How will it treat empty groups, alias and shortcut entries? Will it update the count dynamically? Thanks.
