It already remembers the last database and so, when starting, it populates the databse filename field. What it won't do is remember your passphrase so that it can actually open the database. It never remembers any passphrase and nor would it be good security practice to do so.

I would like to suggest a new feature for Password Safe to set it to open
the last database used when launching.
There are usually 2 reasons why PWS would not remember the last opened DB:
1. You haven't told it to remember. Via Manage->Option : System tab, Ensure that 'n' in "Remember last n databases" is at least 1.
2. You do not have Read/Write access to the configuration file "pwsafe.cfg". For Windows 7 and later, It is normally for the general user in: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\PasswordSafe\ unless you have pointed it to a different location via the command line (although this is currently broken in 3.40 & 3.41).
If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link:
The only change I made is to always open with display compressed. I haven't
yet tried changing that back to see if that caused the issue. I will try
that today and let you know.

where "host" is the name of your PC and "user" is your WIndows logon name.
Between the <user> and </user> there will be a line noting the last database opened (<currentfile>...</currentfile>) and a line like "<maxmruitems>1</maxmruitems>" setting the number of databases to remember.
There will also be a section "<MRU>...</MRU>" saving the database names Safe01 to Safenn, where nn is the number it currently knows about.
Please use a text editor (e.g. Notepad) and change the number to remember e.g. from 1 to 5 and save the file. If you can do this, then you do have read/write access.
Now open PasswordSafe and go to Manage->Options : System tab. This should now show that you wish to remember 5 previous databases. If it doesn't, then the pwsafe.cfg file you just edited is not the one PasswordSafe is using.

Please would you confirm that you do indeed have read write access to the

As I said above, the default location in WIndows 7 and above is:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\PasswordSafe\pwsafe.cfg
