Keyword tags would be a useful and simple way to find related entries that may be in different groups.

This proposal is to add a new per entry text field called 'Keyword-Tags' to the v4.0 database format which would be used for a comma separated list of case-insensitive keywords for 'tagging' an entry.

Later one the v4.x database format is ready, provide the following new feature in PasswordSafe:

  1. A Keyword-Tags text box on the Edit/View entry screen (for example, below the Email text box) where the user could enter their comma separated, case insensitive, per entry keyword tags.
  2. Provide a main menu selection, for example a drop down menu, for user to select a keyword from the list of all keywords in all entries of the database. The database entries with the selected keyword in its Keyword-Tags list would then be shown to the user.

I think this is a simple entries categorization feature that also complements being able to organize entries into groups and sub-groups. The ability to setup filters are great in PasswordSafe, but tags would be quick and easy.

Obviously, if I did not make it clear, the list of keywords across all entries are likely to have a lot in common, so the list provided to the user to select from would only be the unique keywords in the database.

I am sorry but I can't see the need for a separate new field, changes to the UI, support for additional menu selection and import/export of this field as the functionality you request is easily supplied using the Notes field and filters. In fact, the use of filters adds significantly to what may be produced with the extra main menu by use of the AND/OR or multiple tests. It is just not worth the extra work to implement.

    For example:
You could add to the bottom of the Notes field combinations or something like:
    KT#friend;KT#enemy;KT#male;KT#female.

You could use filters to then only show your female friends or male enemies.

Note: These filters can be saved within the database and so would not have to be re-entered each time you wanted to select particular entries..

DrK, you have made some accurate points about being able to use Notes and Filters. However, what I propose is simple and user friendly precisely because it doesn't depend on setting up Filters and hacking up Notes. I think it would greatly benefit new users. And there is another big benefit you are not thinking about. Other password apps on mobile offer keyword tagging just as I have described. Mobile apps that support the PasswordSafe format would be able to easily support creation and use of tags on mobile whereas doing so using tags in thr Notes and Filters is not as easy and would likely never be offered as a feature on mobile app that support the PasswordSafe format.

I am an experienced computer user but a fairly new user of PasswordSafe and I had difficulty the first time setting up a Filter that is saved in the database because it was not very intuitive how to do it. Simple tags are a worthy feature to add in my opinion.
