PSafe 3.x can't open pw files that don't have .dat extension
Popular easy-to-use and secure password manager

I have a password safe file with the extension .pws. I
associated this with password safe so I could
double-click on .pws files and open them (.dat was too
generic for this purpose). This worked fine in
Password safe 2.x. Now, when I try to open these files
using the "Open Existing Database" button in Password
Safe 3.x, I get the message "Incorrect passkey, not a
PasswordSafe database, or a corrupt database. (backup
database has same name as original, ending with '~')".

This is odd.
To narrow down the bug, could you copy the .pws file to one
with a .dat suffix and try to open it both with the 2.x and
3.x versions?
Thanks,

I've tried exporting from/to Password Safe 3, using
versions 3.0beta1, 3.01 and 3.02. Version 3.01 and 3.02
can't open previous file versions, regardless of
extenstion. Mine are named .psafe3 and I get the same
errors. To re-create this bug, create a new file with
3.0beta1 then try opening it with 3.01 or 3.02. The bug
does not occur with versions prior to 3.0beta1...

Aha.
3.0Beta1 had a bug which caused it to write databases
incorrectly. That is, databases written by 3.0Beta1 could
only be read by that version. This has nothing to do with
the file's suffix.
Please upgrade to 3.02 - the beta versions should NOT be
used for "real" data. If you've data in a 3.0Beta1 database,
your best bet would be to export it to a text file, and
import that to 3.02.
Cheers,
Rony
