Device hangs in attempt to display GIF

In ZBoxZ v030a and v030, I am unable to display any images with PiNGer. For example, I use linbox to box up a small (500x306) GIF89 file with 16 colors, 4 bits per pixel, non-interlaced. I sync it to the pilot. ZBoxZ sees it. I select Media/PiNG. The screen clears and I see the filename of the image at the bottom of the screen but nothing else. Now my device is hung -- it will just sit here forever until I poke it.
I haven't found an image that will work. Some PNGs won't even HotSync to the pilot -- the HotSync just fails.
This happens on two platforms: Palm Vx with PalmOS v3.5.2, no hacks, and a Sony Clie PEG-N760C running PalmOS 4.1 (probably had some hacks).
PS Hate to complain -- ZBoxZ is great!

IMNSHO, the GIF stuff in PiNGer is completely broken. I
snarfed gif2png 2.4.2 and compared sources, and the GIF code
in PiNGer just doesn't correspond. On one hand, supporting
this legacy format would be a nice feature, on the other
hand, isn't it time to bury GIF?
