You can selectively increase the log debug level for winbind. Edit smb.conf to say, for example: 

log level = 1 winbind:5 auth:3 

Then restart services and you'll have lots to read, some of it possibly helpful, in /var/log/samba/log.wb-* and log.winbindd.
