Where is the difference? The answer to this depends on how you chose to implement dbt2. We implemented it on SAPDB and PostgreSQL, and I believe the differences from TPC-C are documented in the kit in a separate document. Our (OSDL) purpose in using this kit is to drive Linux kernel performance. So in the event that the database did not perform well, we may have broken the rules so that the workload drove the kernel harder. Also, this kit was not audited ever. You can only claim compliance if you have an audit. We also want to avoid comparisons with _any TPC-C results, and you should never ever make a statement about dbt results being equal to a TPC-C result. > Because I intend to use the dbt2 as a benchmark to > analyze database performance. We use dbt2 to analyze patches for the databases by taking a before and after result. The effect of any patch will depend on how you have set up dbt2 on your system. For example, you can set up dbt2 to be cached to avoid having too many disks, so the transaction rate goes high and you can detect improvements to memory management or logging. Or you can run it with the full compliment of disks and examine improvements to (in the case of PostgreSQL) Linux page cache management etc etc. A cached dbt run would not be anything like a TPC-C configuration. Again this is something the kit allows and therefore that makes the kit not equal to a TPC-C. But its still a great tool for create database workloads. You just need to think about how you are setting it up and what you are trying to achieve. > > Also I'd like to know, are there any plans to support > other, particularly commercial databases, e.g. DB2, > Oracle or Informix?? It is not likely that you will see this coming from OSDL, as we run only open software here. But this is an open project and others are welcome to contribute open code to the project. So I cant say it will never happen. > > Thanks Katja > > > __________________________________ > Do you Yahoo!? > Yahoo!
