Yes, unfortunately I think this is the only way... I don't want to fallback to the previous implementation... it was more portable, but in terms of performance and scalability it was a pain... anyway, I'll investigate a bit, since a lot of other perl modules use the native threads maybe someone has found a nice way to resolve...
