#13 More inbuilt features needed for browing archives
The archive functionality is rather poor as is the search function. The search is limited by the ability of MySQL searches. The archives are simply through a calendar type function and an awkard mechanism in the newswire display.
A more useful method is needed tor going to a particular date or period in the past. Also it would be useful if Oscailt could somehow index the system to figure out the most important stories or features or define some way to determine what is important and then to present a set of links, summaries, pages or some new way of displaying this data.
In release v3.6 and minor update was made to allow for it to just search features, newswire (i.e. all stories) or photo gallery. There are links on the month level and week level in addition to the existing day level which allows the newswire to be displayed for those respective ranges. Still not ideal but some improvement.
Anything that would present a condensed list of say feature titles for the month like the way may blogs do it, would require a fair amount of work and would generate quite a lot of queries to just display the page.
