InfoCentral has stopped all further php development of the source code. I've chatted with ChurchInfo and they have a good project.
Forks are interesting things in Open Source. Forks are necessary and part of the natural process. I believe ChurchInfo is doing a good job. I can highlight a few areas that I believe we are different in. But the overall answer is time will tell.
- OSC is part of the ongoing efforts of ChurchLedger.com. We have a commercial offering and are planning on supporting OSC with a full blown-commercial offering and paid support model.
- OSC has two active developers and the list is growing. I think this is a big issue. Any large successful Open Source project has to attract developers to its core to stay viable.
That's my thoughts. Please feel free to post a reply. We are always open to good vibrant constructive conversation.

When both ChurchInfo and this project were starting out, and still basically are, I chatted with Mike of ChurchInfo and tried to say that we should all get together. I have heard nothing from him to say he has checked it out or even has any interest in doing so.
While he has done some good work, he would seem to be heading down his particular path as opposed to building a common product that many churches can use while just working in a few particulars with each version for himself.
That ends up unfortunate because I believe a project with combined interests moves much more rapidly than a person or two going down their own path.
Hopefully at some point Mike will chat with OSC but it will get more and more difficult to combine as each product diverges and that is what I have expressed to all.

Actually, I did trade a couple of emails with Mike. Both cordial and we all have great intentions. I think Mike's direction is for the purposes of his own organization. I can't say to know the "mind" of Mike. But I do know myself and the crew that have signed up on OSC (Steve, Ron,....) have some broad ideas and barrels of enthusiasm.
Chatting with Steve K. I think we envision a product for both churches but other "membership" oriented organizations, such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Lions Club...
Stay tuned. I think as time progresses you'll be able to gauge which shop in the Bizarre is drawing the crowd. Who knows, maybe both!!!
In the end, forks are good. Especially for thick soup.
I think we also see the possible use of this project by other religious organizations or other religions.

It seems to me that the main reasons that this fork is different from ChurchInfo are the OSC affiliation with ChurchLedger.com, and the Family-based pledge/payment system introduced with ChurchInfo.
My focus with ChurchInfo is primarily providing automation to support the operation of a church. I think the opportunities to specifically support a church are very compelling and often irrelevant to other types of organizations.
Most of the work I did on ChurchInfo preceded the OSC fork by about 4-6 months, so I was surprised the OSC team didn't discuss their plans with me. The OSC project was already releasing files when I first heard of it.
My main development agenda with ChurchInfo is largely complete. I am still calling it "beta" because the new financial system involves a lot of code and I want to be sure it is bulletproof before declaring it "stable".
I am happy to discuss ChurchInfo and the relative merits of various ideas with anyone who is interested.
Mike

Why create another php fork of InfoCentral? How is ChurchInfo different from this fork?
Thanks for your post, snsparrish.
