no apic on Laptop with linux-2.5.42 kernel

I found that the Linux-2.5.42 check the machine and disables the apic on 
a number of the laptops (including the Dell Inspiron 4100 I have). Even 
if power management is turned off the kernel doesn't allow the use of 
the local apic. Thus, OProfile can't use the performance monitoring 
hardware. On the up side the machine will not hang from power management 
events.
