The attached patch to configure.in adds the suggested checks for bfd_elf64_powerpc[le]_vec into the config test program. I had tested earlier patches on PPC64 machines with and without current gcc/binutils, as well as on an x86 box with RHEL 3. I did some digging and came up with an x86 box that had RHEL 4 installed, so I tested this current patch there, too, and it seems OK.
