I believe it hasn't been done because no one's done it yet. ;-) I think gtklookat still uses GTK+ 1.2, rather than 2.x. Presumably an update of the code to newer GTK+ would include an update to GtkGLExt. The *lookats in general have a history of being only sporadically maintained. I don't have the time or inclination to work on them myself, so updating them (or not) has fallen to others.
