ah! Thanks for pointing that one out - it looks like this was the 
culprit. In the connection log I also see

Fri Dec 19 10:17:45 2014 us=813951   route_nopull = ENABLED

which suggests that my colleague changed something he shouldn't have ....
I'll follow up on this once I know more.
