is there a new version due soon? i am just about to start playing around with it and wanted to make sure that my efforts won't be wasted if there's a new version round the corner..

That said, you should start playing around with the current version. Unless OpenSRS completely changes things (which I doubt), any new development on the PHP class should not be backwardly incompatible.
Also, please join the mailing list, rather than use these web-based forums. All the cool kids are doing it.
