In set mode when the set is completed and try to present either on dual or single screen the
box coms up that says downloading songs and the icon spins but does not load any songs. The program remains hung up at that point. We had to abort our church program for this evening and go to using books. I have tried all I know. I tried to download and reinstall program and this exception came up. I do not know if this is relavent to my problem or something else but included it anyway.

I have since deleted the version of open song I had and downloaded the current version thinking there may have been something corrupt in my version. It downloaded and will open will not find any of my previous backgrounds or settings or songs that I had been using in the This PC/Documents folders

    Hi Mike,

Sorry for your troubles. I can't think of what caused your initial failure to present the set. OpenSong does not download any songs from anywhere. It always loads them from the Songs folder or displays an error that it did not find it or could not load it (if it is corrupted or for some other reason does not contain properly formatted XML which represents a song. So, either the message was displayed by some other program, or a different message was displayed by OpenSong.

The stack trace you provide is unrelated, as the function involved is called only during startup of the program. So this is either a result of some failed attempt to resolve your original problem, or a cause of some other serious problem with your computer. I suggest you check the file system of your Harddisc(s) and check your network in case any files related to the working copy of OpenSong resides on a network drive. Also check Windows eventlog.

If your newly updated OpenSong does not find your pre-existing songs, sets and background, you need to configure OpenSong to point to the same folder for its Documents Folder, as the old one did (assuming your file system is not damaged that badly). If only backgrounds are missing, configure the Backgrounds Folder. This setting only exists in the beta versions. If you have not set it yet, don't set it. There is no way of un-setting it. If you set it to any location other than the default, then don't use any of the settings that cause the program to use relative paths for backgrounds or pictures. You do these configurations from the General Settings ... dialog. Choose the folder that has Sets, Songs, Backgrounds, and Settings as subfolders (but not the one under Program Files) as your Document Folder. If there is an object named Scripture in that folder, make sure it is a folder and make sure you can create modify and delete file in that folder (otherwise you will get errors just like the stack trace you provided).

There are multiple issues with the latest download (which is a beta version). If you experience issues, please report them, if they were not reported before. Unless you need any of the newly added features, I recommend to downgrade if any of the issues with the beta version bother you. If you do so, check your configuration after downgrading. If possible, restore configuration files from a backup. Configuration files are located in <opensong documents="">\Settings and in %AppData%\OpenSong (where "<opensong documents=""> represents the folder you set in General Settings)</opensong></opensong>

OK so Opensong was downloading but not without errors. Once I downloaded and opened the program all looked well except for not finding my files as discussed above. When I closed opensong and went back to reopen it had disappeared as of it was never downloaded. I did this a few times before I gave up and did a recovery / reset on the computer. I downloaded opensong again and now all is well as far as the program running and finding the song / background files that I pointed to in the general setting. The last issue now is that it will not recognize the ESV.ind file that I have for the ESV Bible version. I am trying to find and download another ESV version in XML format but am not able to find one on the internet. Would you happen to have a link or know where one might be found?

      Hi Mike,

this sounds strange to me. If you could not properly download the OpenSong installer, it is more than likely it would not install at all, rather than in some incomplete or corrupted way. Neither OpenSong itself, nor Windows, would cause a program to disappear, even it it was corrupted in some way. Maybe your malware protection misbehaved?

ESV.ind is a word index for full text searches within the bible. It is supposed to be located in a folder named indexes, either just below the folder where ESV is located, or possibly in the folder Scriptures\indexes below OpenSong documents. If this file is causing problems, just delete it. OpenSong will inform you on next startup of the missing index and ask you, if you want to generate it. Even if you don't, you can still use the bible to display passages by reference.
In older versions of OpenSong you may have to run OpenSong once "as Administrator" in order to write the index file.

Regarding download of the ESV: our web site sais English Standard Version :: removed on request of Crossway (5 Mar 2021)

Addendum to the above. opensong will still not open in the present mode. Single or dual. It shows a text box that says downloading songs. This is the same problem I had to begin with.

      • Could you please grab a screenshot of that message.
      • Do you get this message even for a set you just created from scratch?
      • Do you get the same message if you try to present a song from the song editor, without adding it to a set first?
      • Do you get the same message if you add only set items other than songs (i.e. text slides or Scriptures)?

Could not make the Beta version work so downgraded and running the 2.1.2 version and things seem to be working well for what I need except I lost the ESV. Still looking for a download for that. Didn't there used to be a list of many different translations available?

    Hi

There is the list of bibles at OpenSong.org Downloads, to which gave a link above already.

There you first get referred to Zefania XML, because it is by far the most comprehensive archive of bibles compatible with OpenSong.

The ESV is under copyright by Crossway. Unless they grant permission, there is nothing we can do.

i had this problem, and it turned out to be that I had special characters in the song title. When I removed the special characters it was no problem to send it to presentation.
