Greetings, The latest version of OpenSLP is now available at the usual location: http://www.openslp.org/download.html The following is a shortened list changes for 1.0.8: - Added patches to handle '==' SLPv1 predicates. These patches allow for better interoperability with Novell SLP networks. - Force use of numeric IP addresses in all DAAdvert and SAAdvert messages (as per RFC2608). - Fixed bug where idle connections to DAs were not being aged. - Fixes for various and obscure errorcode and memory access problems Thanks to all those whose patches have made this release better. -- Matt Peterson Sr. Software Engineer Caldera, Inc ma...@ca... |

Hi, The 1.0.x branch of OpenSLP appears to be getting very stable (by this I mean that each release is including fewer and fewer bug fixes). The changes between 1.0.6 and 1.0.7 are minimal, but probably important enough to check out. OpenSLP-1.0.7 and associated release notes can be found at: http://www.openslp.org/download.html -- Matt Peterson Sr. Software Engineer Caldera, Inc ma...@ca... |

OpenSLP 1.0.6 is now available for download at the following URL: http://www.openslp.org/download.html OpenSLP 1.0.6 contains two important bug fixes: - Always set the FRESH flag for registrations. OpenSLP ignores this flag, but other DA implementations like K&A SLP do not. - Fixed a SEGV in the SA that was generated by a double free when a DA became unreachable during a transaction. It is recommended that all users upgrate to this release. -- Matt Peterson Sr. Software Engineer Caldera, Inc ma...@ca... |

Greetings, The latest stable version of OpenSLP is 1.0.5. OpenSLP-1.0.5 fixes a few important bugs. The following is a shortened list changes for 1.0.5: - Minor changes to the way that settings from /etc/slp.conf affect active and passive discovery. - Applied fix from Tim Zurcher that makes it so that errorcodes for service-agent and directory-agent SrvRqsts are returned correctly. - Fixed possible SEGV when reconnect to DA failed. With out this change it would be possible to add a NULL socket structure to the outgoing socket list. This would be very bad. - Properly rooted startup scripts - Changed declaration and definition for strncasecmp and strcasecmp so that there is only one place for them in slp_compare.c and slp_compare.h - Honor scopes in SrvRqsts for the special "service:directory-agent" type - Fixed problem with SLPEscape() as patched by Timothy Zurcher OpenSLP 1.0.5 is now available on from: http://www.openslp.org/download.html -- Matt Peterson Sr. Software Engineer Caldera, Inc ma...@ca... |

Get the latest release of OpenSLP at the following URL: http://www.openslp.org/download.html OpenSLP-1.0.4 fixes some fairly important bugs. It is highly recommended that all OpenSLP users upgrade to this release. The following is a shortened list changes for 1.0.4: - Use IP address in agent url for those operating systems where gethostname() does not return a fully qualified domain name (FQDN). - Applied patch from Tim Zurcher to fix memory realloc problems when messages exceed the SLP MTU of 1400 bytes. - Fixed SEGV when operating with Mac OS/x which insists on sending corrupt SLP messages. Thanks to Ernie Stepson for reporting this problem. - Added code to log parse errors and dump bad messages to the log - Fixed problem where libslp.so would loop tightly if SLPReg() and SLPDereg() were called after previously contacted slpd had died. - Fixed problem where empty message was sent when talking to more than one statically configured DA. Patch from Timothy Zurcher. |

The latest stable version of OpenSLP is 1.0.3. http://www.openslp.org/download.html OpenSLP-1.0.3 fixes a few minor bugs. Some of the bug fixes are important because they fix interoperability problems that OpenSLP has with other SLP implementations like Netware 6 and Mac OS/X. The following is a shortened list changes for 1.0.3: - Fixed several bugs that were resulting in messagage being send that contained 2-6 bytes of trailing garbage. The garbage was disrupting interoperability with other implementations most notably the Netware 6 DA Special thanks to Timothy Zurcher for debugging this problem. - Changed install script so that it does not erase existing configuration files - Fixed reconnect code to be able to interoperate with inefficient DAs that close the stream after each srvreg/srvack exchange. This change fixes interoperability with the Mac OS/X DA which is reported to make inefficient use of TCP. Special thanks to Timothy Zurcher for debugging this problem. - Applied patch that fixes compile problems related to inet_aton() on Win32 - Fixed configure scripts so that -lresolv is used on Solaris - Removed calls that (sort of) enforce service-url checking. This is for the benefit of AFP's usage of SRVLOC. Developers are now trusted not to register ambiguous service-urls. - Applied Tomasz K?oczko patch for automake 1.5 -- Matt Peterson Sr. Software Engineer Caldera, Inc ma...@ca... |

Version 1.0.2 of OpenSLP has been relesed. OpenSLP-1.0.2 fixes a few minor bugs and weird behaviors. The following is a shortened list changes for 1.0.2: - Fixed minor name resolution problem so that reverse lookups are not performed on hostnames supplied as are dotted IP addresses - Fixed minor problem where DAs listed in net.slp.DAaddresses could not be found if multicast was not enabled. - Fixed minor bugs in DA discovery code so that SLPFindScopes() returns more consistant results. - Applied patch by Tomasz K³oczko that fixes build with configure 2.5x - Applied patch from Jim Meyer that fixes several predicate parsing irregularities - Minor compilation and bug fixes: typecast char to int when passed to is*() functions, fix size of Attribute Reply buf etc. You can download openslp 1.0.2 from the usual location: http://www.openslp.org/download.html -- Matt Peterson Sr. Software Engineer Caldera, Inc ma...@ca... |

Hello, I've made a binding for Objective Caml 3 to OpenSLP 1.0.1. Objective Caml is a ML-like language with functionnal, imperative and object oriented capabilities. For more on O'Caml, look at: http://caml.inria.fr/ Source available at: http://www-rocq.inria.fr/~mentre/software/misc/ocaml-openslp-R1.0.1-0.1.tar.gz From the README: O'Caml OpenSLP binding ====================== Provide OpenSLP functionnalities to Objective Caml programs. Only OpenSLP _synchronous_ API is available. However, all functions that are really implemented within OpenSLP 1.0.1 are available. License : same as OpenSLP license (BSD-like one). Example of use ============== printf "** service registration **@."; let h = Open_slp.create "" in Open_slp.reg h "service:ocamlslp_test.inria://www-rocq.inria.fr/solidor" Open_slp.lifetime_maximum "" "(firstname=david),(type=test)"; printf "** service location **@."; let services = Open_slp.find_srvs h "service:ocamlslp_test.inria" "" "" in printf "Services:@."; List.iter (fun (s, t) -> printf " %s,%d@." s t) services Best regards, d. -- Dav...@in... Greetings, It has been about 18 months since the start of the OpenSLP project and we are finally releasing the first version of a 1.0.x stable branch. Thank you for the development, patching and testing effort that have helped us get this far. Now that we have released of OpenSLP 1.0.0, the CVS repository will be branched to allow new development for the next major release of OpenSLP. OpenSLP 1.0.x will continue as the stable branch allowing conservative bug fixes only. OpenSLP 1.1.x will be the main development branch that will be used to implement revisions and features currently under discussion on the Service Location Protocol mailing lists (see http://srvloc.org) The following is a shortened list changes for 1.0.0: - Fixes all known bugs (SourceForge bug tracker http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=1730&atid=101730 for details) - Duplicate results in sync API calls are now removed - Fixed several SEGVs attributed to parsing bugs - Fix "echo to ourselves" bug when slpd is running as a DA - Cosmetic logging changes - ALL PLANNED FEATURES ARE SUPPORTED IN THIS RELEASE It is highly recommended that all OpenSLP users upgrade to this release. OpenSLP 1.0.0 can be downloaded from the usual location: http://www.openslp.org/download.html -- Matthew Peterson Sr. Software Engineer Caldera, Inc ma...@ca... |

Greetings, There has been renewed interest in moving SLPv2 specifications from Proposed Standard to Draft Standard. This is actually a very good thing for SLP and for those individuals and companies that have chosen to use it. Currently there is an effort to determine the revisions that will be made to RFC2608 and related specifications. I *highly* recommend that anyone interested in these changes and clarifications please visit http://www.srvloc.org/advance.html and subscribe to the srvloc-discuss mailing list. For those not familiar with the IETF process, the following is an excerpt from RFC 1500: 4.1.1. Standard Protocol The IESG has established this as an official standard protocol for the Internet. These protocols are assigned STD numbers (see RFC- 1311). These are separated into two groups: (1) IP protocol and above, protocols that apply to the whole Internet; and (2) network-specific protocols, generally specifications of how to do IP on particular types of networks. 4.1.2. Draft Standard Protocol The IESG is actively considering this protocol as a possible Standard Protocol. Substantial and widespread testing and comment are desired. Comments and test results should be submitted to the IESG. There is a possibility that changes will be made in a Draft Standard Protocol before it becomes a Standard Protocol. 4.1.3. Proposed Standard Protocol These are protocol proposals that may be considered by the IESG for standardization in the future. Implementation and testing by several groups is desirable. Revision of the protocol specification is likely. 4.1.4. Experimental Protocol A system should not implement an experimental protocol unless it is participating in the experiment and has coordinated its use of the protocol with the developer of the protocol. -- Matthew Peterson Sr. Software Engineer Caldera Systems, Inc mpe...@ca... |

OpenSLP version 0.9.1 is now available at the usual location: http://www.openslp.org/download.html OpenSLP 0.9.1 is a bug fix release. It does not offer any new features, but since some the fixed bugs were fairly serious it highly recommended that 0.9.0 users upgrade. The following is a shortened list changes for 0.9.1: - Fixes all known bugs (SourceForge bug tracker http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=1730&atid=101730 for details) - Minor build changes for BSD - Fixed up broken SLPv1 support.Changed includes of the form "../common/header.h" to "header.h" because of potential breakage for non source directory builds. - Added a EPM slp.list.in file and updated configure.in. EPM is an Easy Package Manager (http://www.easysw.com/epm) that allows easy creation of different packaging formats.) |

Greetings, Due to the need to make some significant changes to the code, we have decided to make one final major release before 1.0.x. Most of the changes in OpenSLP 0.9.0 were required to add SLPv2 authentication support. The most obtrusive change for 0.9.0 is a rewrite of the internal database used to store registrations and known DAs. Now, instead of copying fields from SrvReg and DAAdvert messages, the registration and known DA databases now save off the *entire* message along with the SLPMessage descriptor. This allows for slightly faster processing, but more importantly, it allows for storage of authentication information in a way that does not require the SA or DA to have to recalculate signatures for each reply. The following is a summary list changes for 0.9.0: - Full SLPv2 Authentication support - Documentation for SLPv2 features. - Completely new internal registration and knownDA database implementation - Optional net.slp.checkSourceAddr security feature - Support for net.slp.OpenSLPVersion - Support for special service-types "service:directory-agent" and "service:service-agent" can now be used in calls to SLPFindSrvs() - Changes to libslp to prepare for collation in 0.9.1 - Fixes for sever socket reconnect, reuse, and aging bugs - Fixes for several slp.reg parsing errors. - Fixed for "invalid predicate" SEGV - Debug logging of registrations and known DAs on receipt of SIGINT - Debug malloc wrappers Source code for OpenSLP 0.9.0 is now available at the usual location: http://www.openslp.org/download.html -- Matthew Peterson Sr. Software Engineer Caldera Systems, Inc mpe...@ca... |

I was notified a few weeks ago of interesting discussions taking place on the DMTF about the use of SLP. The DMTF (www.dmtf.org) is the industry organization that is leading the development, adoption and unification of management standards and initiatives for desktop, enterprise and Internet environments. There is a very good chance your company is a member of this organization as it has very strong support from a very long list of companies: Microsoft, HP, Sun, Intel, IBM, Cisco, and many more (see http://www.dmtf.org/db/list/company.php3 for complete list). It looks as though the DMTF will be successful in defining a set of interoperability management standards that will be used by many different companies to build compatible management software. In their current design there is an obvious need and unaddressed need to recommend a standard for the location of services. I am not a DMTF expert, but it looks like SLP is exactly what they are looking for. Representatives from Microsoft (and others), seem show a lack of understanding of important aspects of service location and they appear to be pushing other non-IETF standards. Sun, Caldera, and others are supporting the use of SLP as an interoperable protocol for service discovery, while the majority of DMTF members are undecided due to lack of information or misunderstanding of the fundamental requirements for service location. Please take a moment see if your company is a member of the DMTF and if possible become involved in the discussions that are defining their service discovery standards. If you have the time wish to become involved, you can sign up as a member using the following form: http://www.dmtf.org/db/forms/access. You will probably want to subscribe at least to wg-...@dm... which is currently discussing SLP. This is a great opportunity for SLP to shine at solving the problem it was designed to solve. Let's help the DMTF make a good decision by recommending the use of SLP where it is appropriate. -- Matthew Peterson Sr. Software Engineer Caldera Systems, Inc mpe...@ca... |

The openslp-0.8.0 is the first "feature complete" Alpha release of OpenSLP. Nearly all features that will be included in the 1.0 release of OpenSLP are now implemented. Get openslp-0.8.0 from: http://www.openslp.org/download.html Since a significant amount of code has changed for this new version it is considered to be less stable than 0.7.8 be careful after updating. ChangeLog ---------- - More efficient rewrite of code that selects a DA to satisfy API requests - Implemented SLPFindScopes() in libslp - Send dead DAAdvert as part of graceful shutdown - DAs now echo local registrations to other DAs (slpd as a DA also acts like an SA for local API callers) - Added code to ensure we respond correctly (with AUTHENICATION_UNKNONW) when a request with a SPI is received - Changed SLPD behaviour to be less destructive on SIGHUP. SIGHUP no longer dumps the entire registration database on SIGHUP. SIGHUP only causes slpd to re-read configuration and static registration as well as perform DA discovery. -- Matthew Peterson Sr. Software Engineer Caldera Systems, Inc mpe...@ca... |

Please comment on the approval from Caldera management to change the license for OpenSLP. Several emails have been received informing us of LGPL restrictions that make it difficult for commercial use of OpenSLP. In order to be truly useful SLP needs to be deployed on more systems and used widely by developers. BSD is a very comfortable license for nearly everyone, so we hope that offering OpenSLP under the BSD license will facilitate accelerated adoption of SLP as the industry standard for IP based service location. This is not a formal announcement, it is a request for comments to get a feeling for how this change would be received. (A formal announcement will be made at the next release.) Please send messages of approval or disapproval -- either to the list or directly to me (since the announce list is read only). OpenSLP 0.7.8 has been released. http://www.openslp.org/download.html Changes for this version and the consist of the following: - slpd now does a graceful shutdown on SIGTERM to deregister serviced with DAs - Considerable time spent using commercial debugging tools to remove ALL memory leaks from slpd (without predicates) and libslp. - IPC (via loopback) is now used by libslp to obtain DA information from slpd before multicasting - slpd running as a DA now sends passive DAAdverts - slpd running as an SA now performs active DA discovery - slpd running as an SA now re-registers all services with new DAs - Significant fixes were made to make slpd work properly on multi-homed machines With OpenSLP 0.7.8, predicate support is still disabled by default. We would like just a little more time to clean things up and run validation tests on the new code. It is recommended that --enable-predicates not be used unless you are willing to put up with possibly incomplete code. -- Matthew Peterson Sr. Software Engineer Caldera Systems, Inc mpe...@ca... |

OpenSLP is has been released. Get the latest from http://www.openslp.org/download.html README 0.7.6 ------------ With 0.7.6 OpenSLP is getting very close to being feature complete. 0.7.6 should be much more stable than previous versions of OpenSLP. If you have been waiting for a more stable version before upgrading, now would be a good time. NEWS 0.7.6 ----------- OpenSLP ported to FreeBSD. Compaq Tru64 support is also complete. Full predicate support has been added to OpenSLP. slpd will now correctly answer service requests containing LDAP filters As part of the Windows port, the MSVC project files added. This should make it much easier for OpenSLP to be build on Win32 platform. Most of slpd and libslp code was tested against a malloc debugger. Several bugs and memory leaks were fixed. |

Get the latest OpenSLP http://www.openslp.org/download.html New in 0.7.5: - OpenSLP ported to Win32. - SLPFindSrvTypes() is now functional - Numerous bug fixes For those of you that are interested in using OpenSLP on Windows. Please read the README.W32 file that is included in the distribution for extra Win32 build and install instructions. Be aware that the libslp minor version was updated because of the code that was added to support SLPFindSrvTypes(). The additional code should probably not cause any dynamic linking problems as the libslp interface has not changed. |

Get the latest release of OpenSLP, ver 0.7.4 from: http://www.openslp.org/download.html README OpenSLP release 0.7.4 ---------------------------- For several reasons, a public release of 0.7.3 will not be made available. Instead, all changes have been rolled into 0.7.4. Please be aware that in order to include the DA communication enhancements (detailed in the NEWS file) it was necessary to modify a good portion of the networking code. This new code is not as mature as the 0.7.2 code. Also, a fair amount of work was done to simplify internal data structures to make way for future enhancements. It is expected that some users may just want to stick with 0.7.2 release unless the new DA features are important. Be aware also that there are a few DA communication issues that are not fully resolved (like re-registration of existing services with a newly discovered DA) New in openslp-0.7.4 --------------------- * Finally added SA <--> DA communication resulting in an slpd that now acts as a much better SA and DA. * slpd (as a DA) responds to active DA discovery requests. * slpd (as an SA) performs active DA discovery, supports passive DA discovery, supports static DA configuration, registers and de-registers services with DAs. * libslp now has the ability to register services with to the local slpd (SA), or a discovered DA. This eliminates the need to have slpd running on all machines in certain cases. libslp can now request services from a DA or via multicast or broadcast. |
