    Hello,

I have a set top box with an EM8471.  Which Windows driver do I need to download to get the right firmware ?
I will test with kernel 2.6.24.2 , the box has a Geode SC1200 CPU.

      Hi

You must download driver for REALmagic Xcard from site of Sigma Designs http://www.sigmadesigns.com.
Firmware can be extracted as described in README from:
      1. file rm847x.sy_ in the archive XC_2_1K1.zip
      or
      2. file rm847x.vx_ in the archive XC_2_1W1.zip

I am not sure that your box currently supported by opensigma driver. Could you load sigma-test.ko
module into kernel running on box and post here output of dmesg?

      Sergey

      OK.
I compiled (had to replace create/destroy_device_class by create/destroy_device).
The installed modules en firmware and manually modprobed em8471.  No messages at all.  I did see in /proc/devices
213 sigma, but I did not see new device nodes (that can also be a local udev problem).
      Loading the sigma-test module logged:
      SIGMA PCI device 0000:00:0c.0: reading 0x1c08 - 0x808
      SIGMA PCI device 0000:00:0c.0: reading 0x1c08 - 0x808

      Hi

      Nice infos, thx

It looks for me that your hardware is not supported by any Sigma's drivers (SDK RUA or NetStream public driver) which I have. This is not problem to add support of Geode SC1200 box into opensigma project, so I just interesting: What driver have you used before for your box???

      About kernel oops....
The support of revision C chipset em847X is very experimental and havent tested before. I hope to fix that bugs with your help ;-)

      old driver
      --------------
I have no idea -> I recycled old hardware at the company I work, but the hardware design was done by another company.  I do know that they used Linux 2.4.20, and I have a binary module for that

      #/sbin/modinfo realmagic84xx.o
      filename:       realmagic84xx.o
      kernel_version: 2.4.20-myrio-I3M
      parm_quasar_dev_id:h

But I've never got Linux 2.4 to work properly on the box , and my interest is 2.6 anyway

      Hello Christophe and others!

I have similar set top box and I am trying to make EM8471 working. I have built kernel modules succesfully but they are not loaded at startup. When I try to load xcard module manually, it is loaded together with some other modules but I do not have any messages from them in dmesg.

Does yor box load any opensigma modules at boot?
Are you getting any messages from them in dmesg?

Some more info on my box is in Open Discussion forum.

      Wojciech

        Hello Wojciech  ,

the reason you did not see messages after loading the modules could be because the xcard module does not recognize the PCI id.
You can make the following change to xcard.c :
        645c645
        <       { VENDORID_SIGMAD, 0x8471, PCI_ANY_ID, SUBID_XCARD, 0, 0, 0 },
        ---
        >       { VENDORID_SIGMAD, 0x8471, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, 0 },

        and try again.

        Regards,

        Christophe

But modprobing xcard gave no messages and no device was created.

      The modules loaded :
      root@debian:~# lsmod
      Module                  Size  Used by

      ...

      and I see :
      root@debian:~# grep -i sigma /proc/devices
      213 Sigma

Should I create a device node with major 213 myself ? Which minor ?

      Best regards,

Patching xcard.c to use PCI_ANY_ID and thus force a load, I get
Realmagic XCard driver 0000:00:0c.0: firmware: requesting em847xC.bin
SIGMA board 0: symbol L21_Buf2 not found
Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 80x29
SIGMA board 0: Realmagic Xcard, chip EM8471 (rev. C), 4MB SDRAM
SIGMA board 0: allocation of OSD buffer 640x465-8 at 0xc868a000 (device /dev/fb0)

and I see a /dev/sigma.  To see if it works I need a screen -> I will be back !

      Good Job
Let me tell you some notes:
      1. You can start X-server via created /dev/fb0 device, OSD is working via framebuffer
      2. Be carefull with microcodes: I expect You have to use microcode for revision C of em8471.
      3. Devices can be created manually
      mknod /dev/sigma/em8xxx0 c 213 0
      mknod /dev/sigma/video0 c 213 1
      mknod /dev/sigma/audio0 c 213 2
      mknod /dev/sigma/spu0 c 213 3

      Good luck

And some question: Are you using the box based on Geode SC1200 CPU or some other hardware?

      Hello,

      - So I have to use an X server based on the framebuffer driver ? Currently I use the 'nsc' driber -> will change it
      - I do use the revision C, I don't what  'symbol L21_Buf2 not found '  means ?
      - the devices are created automatically, once I patched xcard.c
      - Indeed the tests are done on the Geode SC1200 based box.

      tests
      -------

      ** video
I tested sending an mpeg2 to /dev/sigma/video0 , but it didn't work, but then again I used the wrong X.  Do I need X also for mpeg display ?
In the log I see lots of messages like
      sigma_isr
      Video threshold interrupt
      Time: 315533881.147190
      sigma_isr
      Video threshold interrupt
      Time: 315533881.167516
      sigma_isr
      Video threshold

      ** sound
catting an mp3 to /dev/sigma/audio0 gave an error 'no space left on device'

I will retry the tests with a framebuffer based X.

      Best regards,

      Christophe

      Hi,

      1. Don't change your currently 'nsc' configuration of X-server. Create the new config file xorg.conf.fb0 in the /etc/X11 directory with next strings in the "Device" section
              Driver       "fbdev"
              Option "fbdev" "/dev/fb0"

After this you can start the second X-server by the command
      startx -- :1 -config xorg.conf.fb0

      2. > I don't what 'symbol L21_Buf2 not found ' means
There is little problem of microcode for em847x rev. C used in windows driver. It is quite good for usage. The another versions of microcode doesn't have this problem.

      3. Geode SC1200 based box
Nice. Have you tested this box with old Sigma Designs's driver?

      4. About video
You have to use pure mpeg2 video stream. It can be created by mencoder via splitting usual mpeg2 file into video and audio streams.

To disable debug messages remove '-DSIGMA_DEBUG=1' from Makefile

      5. I will fix audio issues

      Hi,

it does not work yet.  Do I need to run both X servers at the same time ?  As soon as I start the second one (fbdev based) the screen turns black.  Running the second one alone also only shows a black screen.
When I cat a pure video-only ES mv2 file to /dev/sigma/video nothing happens, except for the debug messages listed before.
What else should be in xorg.conf.fb0 ?

About the old Sigma drivers : I did not test them, because I had only a incomplete software load, based on Linux 2.4.xx.  I don't even know if X was used.

      Regards,

      Christophe

Have you get any console output on the TV?

Actually the blank screen can be via video pinout inconsistence between xcard and your top box. Try to use module ventura4k.ko instead. It is intended for other Sigma's PCI board based on em8471 chipset

The sound is broken. I will add support of sound to test your box

        Hello,

        > Have you get any console output on the TV?

Without the xcard console I can have video console output if I hack the Linux geode framebuffer driver to enable TV out (but the image is bad).

With the xcard driver loaded I see nothing, when starting X-fb X-nsc disappears and I see a black screen.

What I haven't tried yet (lacking a keyboard) is to switch to virtual console 1 to see if I get a framebuffer console with the xcard module.

I'll let you know and will also try the other module.

        Best regards,

        Christophe

      Hello!
I am trying to compile SVN version 14 but I get the following error:

The same is with SVN 13, SVN 12 was building OK.
Where the missing missing identifier should be declared?

I have kernel 2.6.29 on this machine.

      Hi
Remove that string or use revision 12

      The messages like

      Video threshold interrupt
      Time: 315533881.147190
      sigma_isr

mean that decoder is OK and processing of video stream is workable.
