Indeed, this project looks as if it's been abandoned - there seem to be some meaningless new files in the CVS, but I can't seem to find any newer information: the last "news" post dates back to 2005.
I think that's a pitty. No matter if there still are some errors - a lot of work has obviously gone into this, so one shouldn't throw that away. I've just downloaded all the files again (there seems to be at least an update dating back to 2006 - but that's in the files, not in the "news" section), try my best to get it going locally, and then probably start on some documentation for the whole thing, as that seems to be something that has been neglected in the past.
As soon as we have some good documentation, it should be considerably easier to create new elements for the project - as well as attract other developers, who currently seem to shy away from the requirement to "reverse engineer" just about everything here ;-)
I'll try to contact the original project owner regarding my intentions - and should that not work, we probably have to create a fork of this project. In the meantime, perhaps it would be a good idea if everyone that seems to still be interested in this piece of work (after all: more than 180 downloads last week alone) posts a little "me too!" message here, not so much to get directly involved in the development but to show others that while the development seems to have been abandoned, the users (or: potential users) are still interested.

I was just looking into using this system, and I too was put off about the old news. When I went to download it though, there is a release of the 4.0 RC3 core named OSP04X20070126.tar.gz which to me means that work was done at least semi-recently, dated Jan 26, 2007.
This is good news as it would mean it's not as dead as it appears!

I had no trouble with the install. And also had no problems fixing a couple of little bugs and putting in an Image Manager plugin for htmlarea.
I was searching through the subversion repository and came across a partial directory for osp5. An upgrade to current text editora nd such would be very nice indeed.
If I were hoping for a new release, i love to see the following areas worked on:
* \include libraries brought up to date
* user permissions respected across all the modules
* consistent public/private hadling across all the modules
* ToDo/Tasks module
* Survey module.
Here's for Wishing.

I would very much be interested in contributing to the development of this application. I think the potential is there and most of it appears to be in place. Please email me and let me know if I can help with any portion of the modules. I have implemented a scaled down version of it for use already but would love to see all the features come to life.

This looks like the exact feature set for a small organization wanting basic sharepoint functionality.
I've looked at everything I can find and the user interface and features seem far better than the other things I've seen.
So, is this project alive or dead?
We need something and would participate but not on a dead project!
