As I put it to the core list, I'll continue in English. Boost is a pretty cool system, and if it helps us get rid of some of the more esoteric parts of OpenSG (Functors do come to mind ;) I'm all for it. The problem with Boost ist that is it a PITA to build, as you need to build the build tool first, and the process is a little involved, too. Thus I wouldn't really be very happy if the core of OpenSG depended on building Boost libs. Most of the Boost is only headers, as long as we stay within that area I don't see a problem, we might even distribute what we need ourselves, if necessary. But as you say, Boost is pretty well maintained, so that shouldn't be a problem. I don't know everything it contains, what other parts so you thing we could benefit from? Reading through the list I can see filesystem and mpl, maybe spirit, pool, format, io_state_saver and dynamic_bitset. Quite a nice list, actually. Python would be pretty nice, but as that requires an actual lib, I'd rather not see it in the core. Compatibility is an issue here. VC7.0 and 7.1 seem to do pretty well, gcc is not perfect but looks ok, Irix seems to have some problems, and HP-UX fails miserably. With HP being a member of the forum I have a hard time dropping support for HP-UX. :-/ The test sfor HP-UX are 4 months old, though, so maybe things are not quite as bad as they look. I'm pretty far away from an HP-UX machine right now, though. Maybe we can try that in Darmstadt. Comments? Dirk |
