Dear all, Here are some news about the OpenSDRM Project: 1. I have reorganized all the source-code on the SVN repository =96 I think it is less messy now and a little bit more structured; 2. I have added the PHP AH_CRYPTO extension and the MP3 AES protection to the repository as well; 3. I will add soon the source-code of the Zinf modified player to the repository; 4. I will add soon some classes in PHP to use OpenSSL functionalities. =20 Now, I would like if there are some volunteers to conduct some o the = work I=92ve previously distributed by email and that is published at the = web-site. =20 Best regards and have a nice w-e. =20 Carlos Serr=E3o (MSc.) SF Subject: RE: [Opensdrm-general] New version of the document - not yet finished tough =20 Panos & Carlos please find my comments below. =20 Kind Regards,=20 Gregor =20 _____ =20 =20 Some players open up as integrated players with the browser (say MS = Internet Explorer) How easy or difficult is this to be done with IM1/MOSES player [Carlos Serrao] Panos, I hope you have read my previous email =96 I = think I already answered to this =96 but from my previous experience in MOSES, I rather would like to forget IM1 player =96 we already have the VLC = player in our vision which supports MPEG-4 and it can be already integrated in the web-browser as well =96 and not only IE but also FF. [Gregor Siegert] I agree completely to Carlos apart from the limited function set of the IM1 player for two reasons. 1) OpenSDRM is really = open source the IM1/MOSES with its history is not. 2) VLC is a really = excellent and stable player that is already widespread and, if utilized, will open this system to a much larger community. =20 [Carlos Serrao] Yes, IM-1, from what I remember, is a complete mess! = More, with VLC we can find some support in the OS community =96 with IM-1 who = will offer this support? =20 Or the player should be preinstalled in order to open up as integrated = when an appropriate stream encountered ? [Carlos Serrao] The player should be already on the system, if possible = =96 at least it should be a requirement in order to access to DRM-protected content. [Gregor Siegert] I believe that OpenSDRM as such does not need a player, it=92s rather a platform to protect any kind of digital content in a = very flexible way. A specific player for specific content gets relevant if restricted access to content for rendering shall be given to the user. = This may not the goal of all OpenSDRM users. Some may just want to employ = simple watermarking strategies and still allow full access to the content. No special player/rendering device should be needed to achieve that. In = other words OpenSDRM must support players that don=92t integrate with the = server framework. This is my opinion and I think it is a strategic question for what we want to achieve.=20 [Carlos Serrao] It=92s true. OpenSDRM should be independent from the = Player, but not from other client stuff =96 for instance Wallet, once it is responsible for mediating the DRM access. The architecture is: Player -> Wallet -> DRM platform. More, we don=92t need to have any player on the project sure =96 but how do you demonstrate the usability and usefulness = of the system? You need a player to be able to show DRM protected content = =96 just for demonstration. If you don=92t have one, you will have to = convince others to do that for you, and at the beginning this will be extremely difficult. That=92s why we need a player =96 but the system is = independent of the player =96 this I agree. =20 From our own experience, since we have done this to the Zinf player and = MP3, protecting and integrating the protection on the player is not an easy = task =96 that=92s why this is a task that needs a good knowledge of the = content formats and C/C++ programming. I also think that our strategy should be = as much as possible to preserve the content format, and only protected the content data. For instance, in the case of MP3, we have only ciphered = the audio data, maintaining the MP3 file structure. [Gregor Siegert] This also depends heavily on how open the core of the player is. Usually a player architecture is working as a chain of = different components that use intermediate formats on their interfaces. For = instance MP3 --> Decoder --> PCM --> Decoder --> Raw Audio Buffer. One has to = break this chain and insert another component doing some of the DRM stuff, = e.g. MP3 --> Decoder --> PCM --> DRM stuff -> Decoder --> Raw Audio Buffer. Winamp for instance works like that. Some players allow to break the = chain some don=92t. [Carlos Serrao] Yes, that=92s what I said!!! =20 ______________________________________________________________________ |

It is a very crucial point in interoperability terms. With VLC you don=92t need any other =96 it also = supports DVD movies and so on=85 I think that VLC is (in my opinion) our best = choice! =20 Or the player should be preinstalled in order to open up as integrated = when an appropriate stream encountered ? [Carlos Serrao] The player should be already on the system, if possible = =96 at least it should be a requirement in order to access to DRM-protected content. =20 Is then chicken and egg? [Carlos Serrao] Don=92t think so. =20 Can MS Media Player hijack an integrated player and play the content = instead (of course no protection applies in these cases) ? [Carlos Serrao] Sure it can, if you give permissions for that. Windows = Media Player is automatically configured to take over some of the more = well-known content formats. But you can override this. And remember that for = Europe, Microsoft in now obligated to supply a version of Windows XP without the Windows Media Player (I think this is called Windows XP N ???). =20 Carlos who is currently on this reflector ? [Carlos Serrao] All the developers that are subscribed at opensdrm at sourceforce and you. =20 Regards Panos =20 =20 =20 =20 =20 ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Gregor Siegert <mailto:gre...@av...> =20 To: Carlos Serrao <mailto:car...@is...> ; OpenSDRM. Dear Gregor and all, Here are my comments to your email, bellow. =20 Best regards, =20 Carlos Serr=E3o (MSc.) ISCTE/DCTI Lecturer | Adetti Vice-President | PhD Student Adetti/ISCTE/DCTI | Ed. SF Subject: RE: [Opensdrm-general] New version of the document - not yet finished tough =20 Dear Carlos, =20 Thank you for the OpenSDRM introduction, it=92s certainly a system of a = long history. For the future I think the following factors are key to the = success of the system; =20 - Openness to as many content formats as possible [Carlos Serrao] Yes, this is one of the goals. - Openness to as many content rendering devices (players/viewers) = as possible [Carlos Serrao] Again, this is another goal =96 although I think we = should start by something. - Easy extendibility & good documentation [Carlos Serrao] Perfect. =20 Having worked on the original architecture I have the following areas I would like to contribute: =20 - Server platform enhancement, security of the SOAP/XML interfaces between the servers - Cleaning up the code [Carlos Serrao] Ok, this is also one of the areas where Adetti will work = for sure, so we are perfectly aligned in our objectives. We should plan = regular audio-conferences to discuss this issues =96 Skype is a good tool to do = this. =20 I am also interested in integrating another player with the system = Videolan VLC may be an interesting candidate. =20 [Carlos Serrao] Pardon me, but I think VLC is the **PLAYER**, for the following reasons: * It is open-source (GPL) * It supports many audio and video formats including MPEG-4 and DivX (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html) and Microsoft ones (wma and wmv); * It supports many platforms =96 windows, linux, mac, and pocketPC; * It can be integrated as a plug-in or active-x on a web-page inside a web-browser =96 firefox or internet explorer. This ensures that we may be able also to target DRM protected content to many different scenarios and platforms. For this I think VLC is the one. =20 =20 Please use my Lycos address for any future emails: mr...@ly... [Carlos Serrao] done! =20 Kind Regards, Gregor =20 _____ =20 From: ope...@li...
