    Here also I can confirm. OpenNX-0.16.0.725 and Xquartz-2.7.5 in Yosemite 10.10.1.
    Thx!

    Yes thanks Jiro, someone else had reported this and I couldn't get it working before but your post prompted me to give it another shot. I installed OpenNX 0.16.0.725 and XQuartz 2.7.5 and I tried it and it didn't work. I then logged out and logged back in (which I should have done in the first place) and now it works! Thanks again. So happy to have this working again.

    Just a follow up to my own post from two days ago. I tested OpenNX 0.16.0.725 with a few different version of XQuartz. Unfortunately, it has to be OpenNX 0.16.0.725 with XQuartz 2.7.5 to work with Yosemite (10.10.1, to be exact).

    Unfortunately, I can't seem to get xterm, xclock,xeye, etc to work from Terminal.app any more. If I do, I get an error saying "Can't open display: /private/tmp/com.apple.launchd.NDEhRSLs4u/org.macforge.xquartz:0" (or something like that).
    The file itself does exists, however, the path is 65 character long. I'm guessing this is the 64 character limitation that davmp reported a while back.

    Of course, this does not mean that I can't start X11 applications: I can always start xterm from XQuartz itself. Once I do, from there, I can call xeyes, xclock, or any other ones (I think: I can't possibly try everything…). So, this isn't a huge problem. For the very least, with XQuartz 2.7.5, I can use OpenNX when I need it. It also appears that I can do remote X11 via ssh tunneling without any problem. So, I am happy where it is (at least for now).

    XQuartz 2.7.5 on Yosemite did not fix it for me. I dug a bit further into the problem, and this is what I found:

    With Yosemite, the paths for launchd services changes. Previously it was /tmp/launchd, with Yosemite it is /private/tmp/com.apple.launchd.

    The problem seems to be in nxproxy, specifically Loop.cpp, which contains the following snippet:

    #ifdef __APPLE__

    if (strncasecmp(display, "/tmp/launch", 11) == 0)
    {
      #ifdef TEST
      *logofs << "Loop: Using launchd service on socket '"
              << display << "'.\n" << logofs_flush;
      #endif

      useLaunchdSocket = 1;
    }

    #endif

    This test fails on Yosemite, causing that function to believe that the DISPLAY is actually a hostname, and therefore tries to resolve it, but without success.

    I believe it should be sufficient to just add a test so it detects the new path also as launchd socket. I couldn't get nxproxy to build on my machine, so I did not verify this.

    Finally found a workaround. You need macports (from http://www.macports.org) installed with the package nxproxy. The Yosemite problem in nxproxy has been fixed there:

    $ sudo port install nxproxy

    Then go to /Library/OpenNX/bin and replace the nxproxy here with the nxproxy provided by macports:

    $ sudo mv /Library/OpenNX/bin/nxproxy /Library/OpenNX/bin/nxproxy.old
    $ sudo ln -s /opt/local/bin/nxproxy /Library/OpenNX/bin/nxproxy

      Florian,
      Did you get OpenNX working with a new nxproxy with XQuartz 2.7.5 or 2.7.7? If you got it working with 2.7.7, I may be interested in trying…

      Cannot confirm. Tried with XQuartz 2.7.7 + OpenNX 725 and 729, no luck, still the same behavior: "Starting session", then silently back to the login menu :(

    • Hans Rettenwender

      Hi Florian, thanks for posting this solution. Unfortunately, it does not work for me. I installed macports and subsequently executed the commands you posted in terminal. The command "port install nxproxy" returned some errors, though. Is there something that I might have overlooked? You write "go to /Library/OpenNX/bin and replace the nxproxy here with the nxproxy provided by macports:". Do I have to change the directory or is it sufficient to execute the command? Could you post the path to the NXPROXY that comes with macports?

      Thanks a lot in advance!!

      • Florian Bruckner

        Hi Hans,

        macports uses /opt/local as its base directory, so nxproxy is in /opt/local/bin.

        You say that port install nxproxy returned errors - it did not for me. These are the ports that I have installed (I usually use homebrew, so this is very minimal):

        jpeg @9a_1 (active)
        libpng @1.6.15_0 (active)
        nxcomp @3.5.0.28_0 (active)
        nxproxy @3.5.0.28_0 (active)
        xorg-xproto @7.0.26_0 (active)
        zlib @1.2.8_0 (active)

        There may be other issues that I do not have with my installation, but this is all I did to get it running.

  • Florian Bruckner

    Yes, got it working with 2.7.7.

      Florian, thank you for discovering this fix. If you are still listening, could you confirm the configuration that worked for you? I am trying to get it working with:
      1. OSX: Yosemite version 10.10.2
      2. Opennx: Version 0.16.0.729 (RELEASE)
      3. XQuartz: XQuartz 2.7.7 (xorg-server 1.15.2)
      4. nxproxy: Activating nxproxy @3.5.0.28_0
      In , /Library/OpenNX/bin I have
      lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 22 21 Feb 15:49 nxproxy -> /opt/local/bin/nxproxy
      However when I try to connect, I still see the behaviour described by others earlier: opennx goes through all the normal authentication cycle (it seems to ignore any previously open connections), and then bounces back to the login window. Is there any obvious way my setup differs from yours?

  • Florian Bruckner

    This is exactly my setup. I have applied this to a couple of machines I have been using over the past weeks, and it worked on all of them.

    We may be looking at two distinct problems, because there are earlier posts to this issue that a downgrade of XQuartz would do the trick. It didn't (and couldn't, due to the nature of the problem) resolve the problem for me, but did for others.

    • urilabob1

      urilabob1 - 2015-02-24

      Thanks Florian. I think you're right about multiple bugs. My situation is this:
      .Downgrading to OpenNX 0.116.0.725 causes magic cookie problems, so I have to stick with 729.
      .XQuartz 2.7.7 gives the bounce-back-to-opennx problem, whether or not I have your link-to-nxproxy trick set up
      .XQuartz 2.7.5 runs, but doesn't give a proper nx window (no top bar, sets itself up across both screens I am using, and using the whole screen)

      The latter isn't really satisfactory, but I desperately need nx, so I guess that's what I'm going to have to live with for now. Thanks for all your help,
      Bob

      • Jochen Schnuerle

        Bob,
        same to me: mac osx 10.10.2 and XQartz 2.7.5 works (without window border) but 2.7.6, 2.7.7 and new 2.7.8_beta3 does not work. No NX window open after login. I try to set DISPLAY var and all the other tips, but only 2.7.5 works (and without a trick or patch).

          I also have tried Florian's fix on OS 10.10.2, but can only get OpenNX 0.116.0.725 to work with XQuartz 2.7.5, though I do get the nx window border under that config. No luck with XQuartz 2.7.6, 2.7.7 or 2.7.8_beta3.

    Since we don't yet have a reliable fix, I did some exploration of alternatives. Previously, I had tried x2go and found it too unreliable for production use. I'm not sure what has changed (client or server), but so far I have found the latest mac client (4.0.3.2) on Yosemite to play very reliably, both on LAN links (to Fedora 20/21 servers) and on intercontinental WAN links to CentOS (even so, I'd recommend a lightweight desktop such as lxde/lxdm for such applications). If you are still struggling to get nx to work cleanly, this might be a good alternative.

    It seems that the nxssh binary is broken on Yosemite (and none of recipes posted here really help). It needs to be recompiled against recent X libraries, and here is the how to get it done with Xquartz 2.7.7 on Yosemite. It will work using other OpenNX 729 binaries, so have it installed.

    Instructions are loosely based on:
    http://www.nerdenmeister.org/2013/11/09/build-opennx-on-os-x-10-9-mavericks/

    1.
    Set up MacPorts and install these packages (maybe only nxcomp and nxproxy are needed, but I'm posting what I did):

    sudo port install wxWidgets-3.0 curl libidn openssl zlib nxcomp libpng jpeg svn2cl cctools libtool autoconf automake pulseaudio

    1. download nxssh-3.5.0-2.tar.gz (google for it) and compile it:

    tar xzf nxssh-3.5.0-2.tar.gz
    cd nxssh

    UPDATE:added correct env for configure command

    CPPFLAGS="-I/opt/local/include -I/opt/local/include/nx" LDFLAGS="-L/opt/local/lib -L/opt/local/lib/nx -lresolv" ./configure --prefix=/opt/local

    make -j4

    (hint: 3.5.1-2 source might also work but I didn't try..)

    1. copy the binary to OpenNX library area:
      sudo cp nxssh /LIbrary/OpenNX/bin/

    That's it! Run OpenNX and try to connect. If you get an older session with messed up keymap, start another one (happened to me once but later it was always ok).

      Thanks smorovec; can I check one part of your explanation? When I
      followed your recipe, configure picked up the apple openssl
      installation rather than the MacPorts one; for some reason, although
      my mac installation is (as far as I can tell) completely up-to-date,
      the openssl headers and libraries were inconsistent versions, so I was
      unable to get it to work. I tried passing command line parameters to
      configure, to try to switch it to use /opt/local, but haven't been
      able to find the right combination. I'm guessing you are using
      environment variables for the purpose; can you let us know how you
      have them set up?

        You're correct, I forgot to put correct instructions for compiling nxssh (actually taken from www.nerdenmeister.org page). So, nxssh configure needs to be run as:

        CPPFLAGS="-I/opt/local/include -I/opt/local/include/nx" LDFLAGS="-L/opt/local/lib -L/opt/local/lib/nx -lresolv" ./configure --prefix=/opt/local

          Thank you for the details; it's now working perfectly for me.
          Best Wishes

    Today we created a binary packet for openNX which is functional under yosemite.
    feel free to check it out or make improvements.

    currently known problems are:
    some crashes with session assistant (works, but not fine)
    problem with 2 display systems: be aware to create a user defined screen size,
    otherwise the display stays in background.

    download it at: http://www.hirnschwund.de/OpenNX.pkg.zip

      I used this on El Capitan and it worked great, but I just upgraded to Sierra and it connects and then closes.
      Is there an update for Sierra?
