#10 Fatal error: /usr/share/pear/DB/DataObject.php Error

Followed installation instructions, but when I try to go to
..tools/setup.php install schema I get

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: overload() in
/usr/share/pear/DB/DataObject.php on line 3539

The warnings I can live with I think, but the fatal
error not...all I can find from googling web/groups,
the error is 'php 5 doesnt need to use overload
function' but no fix....also checked the forums and
faqs, no-one seems to have the same problem.....ANYONE
any ideas please?
