What is your os version? There are some issues with compilation under RH7.3 for example
that have not been yet resolved (produced executables ended with coredump). 
Try to compile under different os (RH7.2,Mandrake,Solaris are verified to be ok).

Btw. thanks for the backtrace - I will take a look into source code to check this out.
