I hear you; sometimes I do reverse picking over. I start with
something that works and then examine it line by line
revising/adapting it as I go long.  Absolutely, if you are going to
support it you need to be comfortable with it.

I am currently running Mac OS X 10.5.4 and autoconf  2.62 I installed
from mac ports, but until very recently I was running on tiger
10.4.something; autoconf 2.59 shoul be recent enough.
