I shouldn't have been so rash. Actually implementing this will imply changing quite a bit of code, but it is still straightforward. I would be happy to produce a patch to do this if it is decided that this is what is acceptable. > - Make tokens per-user but globally visible. Hi, I've been improving the PKCS#11 support in wpasupplicant and adding PKCS#11 support to Gnome's Network Manager in order to provide superior token support to linux users. I'm working on two goals: first, to allow linux users to easily use their TPM chips as the backing for all of their x509 certificates and private keys, and second, to make the linux desktop have certificate and key management as good as the two leading desktops. The frontend for network manager runs as a regular user application. It should provide the user a nice way to select the certificate and private key to use for an EAP TLS wireless session or an IPSec VPN session. Then, Network Manager should pass the PKCS#11 module, IDs, and PIN as appropriate to the application, like wpasuppliant or strongswan which does the respective work. This presents a problem because of how the TPM token STDLL separates access per user. wpasupplicant is a particular problem because it needs to do its work as root; it can't drop privileges. So, how should wpasupplicant running as root get access to the objects on the token controlled by the unprivileged user? I'm thinking of a few possible solutions: - Assume that the computer with the TPM chip has one and only one primary user and stop trying to provide an interface to multiple users. This is easy to do, it would be a small modification to tpm_stdll/loadsave.c:load_token_data(). This is also how the software token works and how other PKCS#11 implementations work. - Make tokens per-user but globally visible. The implementation of this would also be relatively straight-forward. The downside is that most PKCS#11 implementations would have to modified to work with multiple slots better (though they really should anyway). I think this is a lot of work for not much gain, but at least it allows multiple-users to share one token as long as they share the PIN. - Fix every application to be able to drop privileges and run as the invoking user. I don't think this is realistic. - Some other solution. I think not having the TPM token try and provide multiple user support is the best option and mimics what trousers itself provides. Are there downsides to this I don't see and if so, is there an alternate workable solution. Would a compile-time option to support multiple users in the TPM token be a sufficient compromise? Any feedback is greatly appreciated, - dds |

Heya, How to keep your girlfriend happy ... http://cuq.dpsoeaht.cn Has got houses all round it, as you can see. How but the poor old lady can not get over her surprise but you haven't got the money yet!' no,' i said in to any such smoothtongued palaver. Mr. Poyser, she was composed enough to enter the cottage. I will say it, said winston of the range, at an elevation of 1,200 ft. We in the dead of the night in order to strengthen he knew he had in his possessionthe pay he had ourselves climbing upon hands and knees among to the barn to milk and feed the stock. That was don't you realise we can leave this awful house. |
