You always get the xdd files from the device manufacturer. So, if you create your own device, you have to write an xdd file.
Modular head and child xdds are available for modular devices such as I/O systems. You can download modular xdds from e.g. B&R (X20BC0083) or from Weidmüller (UR20 POWERLINK).
