I have the build of the libraries on my box, and that is compiled and built. I have an application that I am building/working on. There are times when I want a noshared/debug version, which will allow me to inspect all variables etc in gdb.. Then I want a release version of the application, without waiting for the libs to be rebuilt, so I just to make opt then I want a debug version, etc, and the process goes on - you see - I am not going to wait for the libs to be rebuilt each time. Put it another way. It is not possible for a developer to decide at configuration of the library what build is required, because it is not know. Sure, it is known for the gentoo (or equivalent) user who is downloading the library to build it to use in some application.
