The code for this is already in the trunk 5.0.0 build, but we have no record of this enhancement in the CHANGES file and I'm not sure we have docs or tests for this either. This is being opened so that we don't forget the feature.

I was the one who originally opened this as feature request #583 on 2014-02-09 but I was using a different ID (RodD) at the time which I somehow lost at some point. I was probably using my old email account which I no longer have. Apparently, this new feature request was opened later to replace the earlier request.

Is it possible for ooRexx 5.0 and 4.2 to coexist on the same Windows machine?

If so, I could easily test this feature for 64-bit Windows. I am familiar with the IPV4 vs IPV6 differences since I enhanced some z/OS C code from IPV4-only to support both IPV4 and IPV6.

If 4.2 and 5.0 cannot coexist, I am seriously thinking about buying another Windows license so I can install a Windows VM on my desktop as my sandbox testing platform. At that point I would be able to test it.

Yes, it is possible for 4.2 qnd 5.0 (and others for that matter) to coexist on the same Windows machine. By that I mean, it is possible to easily switch back and forth between them but only one can be the "active" version at one time. I did some work on this several years ago which I presented at multiple Symposia. I recently revisited this even though I have been on 5.0 for many years. Let me know if you are interested in my (updated) work and we can take the discussion offline as it isn't directly related to this RFE.

Yes, I would definitely like to know what you’ve done to make switching back and forth between 4.2 and 5.0 possible.

Actually, with the changes to how rxapi communicates in 5.0.0, they coexist
quite nicely. They can both be active at one time.

Let me know if there's anything special I would need to do while installing 5.0 to preserve coexistence with 4.2.

I think this topic would be of general interest to others who have avoided trying out 5.0 because we always thought 4.2 and 5.0 could not coexist. So perhaps you should post a new thread somewhere under a topic called "4.2/5.0 Coexistence".

I agree that this topic might be of general interest so I am going to start a thread later today on the oorexx-devel list where it will get more exposure than it would here in an RFE.
