Likewise (cursing the whatever the vendor did to the ports -- I guess
spanning tree -- for which I get blamed).

What I wanted to do was loop on something that would show that the
interface was actually up with an address, rather than inserting a 10s
pause, or whatever.  I couldn't find a suitable mechanism, though I
forget what I looked at now.  Any ideas?
