I got the problem solved. Maya keeps a copy of the old plug-in even if it's changed. I deleted the Prefs file in my library->Preferences->Alias->Maya->Maya7.0->Prefs
when I restarted Maya my script works as I expect with no outlining and the colors and transparency as I used Paint->Mesh->Vertex.
The first thing I did was flood fill with a color and 50% opacity and them painted with diffent colors and 100% opacity

Do you have any screengrabs of how it looks? I imagine it looks the same in Google Earth because you can only have one color per poly. If you would like we could add your code to the next version (ie make a gui check box for it etc)

I'm now working on a way to represent a picture as a raster of very short line segments each colored to represent a pixel.
yeah we were thinking about how to get textures in ghetto style - I would love to see it if you get it working!!!!
