#3 IPC mechanism to control/inspect server

I'd like to see some sort of IPC that allows an admin to
inspect/manipulate the server. It can be done two
ways. The first is through component technology
(COM/CORBA). An application can connect to the
server and query state or make changes. Another way
is through a protocol extension. We can add new admin
messages to accomplish the same thing
