This note is primarily for ontology developers/providers. It's good practice to provide versionInfo in the release OWL version of your ontology - in obo-format this corresponds to the data-version tag. You can find info on the OBO policy for naming versions here: http://www.obofoundry.org/id-policy.shtml For many groups I would recommend setting this automatically as part of a simple ontology release pipeline. There are some tips here: http://code.google.com/p/owltools/wiki/OortTipsPipeline Having a distinct editors version is a good idea, whether or not you use Oort to make your releases.
