ions=20is=20a=20system,=20used=20for=20communication,=20comprising=20a=20=
finite=20set=20of=20arbitrary=20symbols=20and=20a=20set=20of=20rules=20(o=
r=20grammar)=20by=20which=20the=20manipulation=20of=20these=20symbols=20i=
s=20governed.=20In=20biology=20and=20medicine,=20the=20importance=20of=20=
languages=20used=20to=20represent=20knowledge,=20communicate=20and=20quer=
y=20information=20is=20immense.=20Likewise=20auxiliary=20tasks=20such=20a=
s=20translation,=20summarization=20and=20information=20extraction=20play=
=20important=20roles=20supporting=20scientific=20research.=20The=20automa=
tion=20of=20such=20tasks=20has=20significantly=20advanced=20knowledge=20d=
iscovery=20in=20biomedicine.

Incumbent=20technologies=20that=20discover,=20read=20and=20process=20lang=
uage=20are=20continually=20stretched=20by=20the=20vigorous=20demands=20of=
=20bio-medical=20scientists=20and=20there=20is=20the=20continual=20need=
=20and=20incentive=20for=20language=20techniques=20to=20evolve.=20Despite=
=20this,=20the=20distinct=20communities=20involved=20in=20language=20proc=
essing=20rarely=20borrow=20from=20one=20another=20or=20look=20over=20the=
=20fence=20to=20see=20what=20other=20approaches=20are=20in=20use.=20And=
=20yet=20synergistic=20interactions=20across=20methodological=20disciplin=
es=20and=20across=20different=20topics=20are=20frequently=20the=20harbing=
ers=20of=20revolutionary=20technologies.=20In=20this=20context,=20it=20is=
=20imperative=20that=20we=20adopt=20diversification,=20more=20lateral=20a=
nd=20creative=20interaction=20between=20language=20professionals.

The=20International=20Symposium=20on=20Languages=20in=20Biology=20and=20M=
edicine=20(LBM)=202007=20seeks=20to=20provide=20a=20renewed=20opportunity=
=20for=20interaction=20between=20language=20professionals=20with=20differ=
ent=20methodological=20backgrounds.=20LBM=20was=20established=20in=202005=
=20and=20the=20remit=20of=20this=20event=20remains=20highly=20relevant=20=
today.=20The=20symposium=20focuses=20on=20the=20languages=20that=20are=20=
in=20active=20use=20for=20biology=20and=20medicine.=20

s=20will=20be=20published=20in=20BMC=20Bioinformatics=20and=20receive=20a=
=20MEDLINE=20citation.

ce=20on=20Genome=20Informatics=20(GIW),=20which=20will=20be=20held=20in=
